The Navy says its not worth the risk. I agree with them.
Not only would they be an obvious target the tanker being escorted would be an obvious target. Defending yourself and another boat is asking for a critical failure. If that happens, how do you explain it and what assurances does that give to other tankers? Plus, if a single US sailor gets injured or killed during the job, then who looks like they failed?
