I've been trying to decide rather or not to kill possums that get in my dog proof traps. Do you guys feel possums predate enough nests to warrant trying to thin them out? From what I gather they really only gets nests where another predator has already run the hen off.

My original hesitation to kill possums was from the false assertion that they eat tons of ticks (after researching further, that claim is false). However, they do eat slugs, snails, beetles, cockroaches, mice, rats, and even venomous snakes like rattlesnakes and copperheads, fallen fruit and rotting vegetation, and reduce the risk of disease from decaying animal matter. They do contribute to tick elimination by killing the ones that get on them. I'm just trying to weigh the pros vs the cons of killing them.

Turkeys eat most of that too and I'd much rather kill a possum to save some turkey eggs.
