The new fridge in the new beach house needs a light in the freezer. Mountain Boho reads the manual and proclaims that "An authorized service technician" has to replace it.
I'm like, "Screw that" and get online to find the part and it's the whole bulb and housing and it's $18 on Amazon.
I'm thinking as a hit the order button... "That's just a basic Whirlpool sided by side fridge, if the light bulb costs $18 then how do they sell that fridge at Lowes for $1000?" Just the parts to make the fridge must cost about $8000.

I had the opposite experience on my rototiller with amazon. I looked up all the parts i needed for the tecumseh engine: carburator, filters and plugs $16 for all. While buying the real parts from jacks small engine would be $100 plus.

Mrs. Marsh bought a new fridge a few years ago. We had a large whirlpool French door with the bottom freezer. I’m not sure why but she decided she needed a different but the same fridge. She bought a Samsung French door with the freezer on the bottom. Well we need a bigger fridge at the deer camp so I brought the whirlpool to the camp. Fast forward less then 3yrs, at Christmas time the Samsung fridge stops cooling. I call every appliance repair service I can find. No one will touch Samsung products. I contact the place she purchased it and was finally able to get someone out to look at it. A guy shows up and I think he was a cross between a Mexican, a Chinese, and a Pakistani. Very hard to understand. He goes through all kinds of tests and checks a few things and tells me it was out of either out or low on refrigerant. I asked if he was going to recharge the system. He tells me he can’t because it’s a sealed system and the whole cooling system has to be replaced. Well I knew it had a 5 year warranty parts and labor on the sealed system. He tells me that I was wrong, it’s 2yrs. I get the book and show him. He reads it and looks at me with a shit eating smirk and asks me for the proof of purchase. I looked at the bastage and told him he knew good and well that I would have no idea where that would be. After a few choice words I ask him what the out of pocket cost would be for the repair. He tells me $1200-$1500. I almost fall to my knees at told him we didn’t pay that much for the fridge brand new. He shrugged his shoulders and told me that just the way it is. I politely(not really) showed him the way out of my house real quick. Needless to say we have a nice stainless whirlpool fridge again and I told Mrs. Marsh that if she ever bought another Samsung appliance that she and the appliance was gonna have to live in the shed. She told me that she was gonna go pack her bags. I asked why. She then tells me that the brand new washing machine she bought the month before was. Samsung!!

The refrigerator that was in my grandmothers basement, when she died, was about 60 years old and still running strong. I’m convinced they make stuff to break now days.

I had a repairman tell me 5-7 yrs life expectancy on most appliances now. As with everything now, either you get a good one or a lemon.

Lady at school I taught with before I taught(who was SMOKEN HOT 24 year old,) which doesn't really matter. Her husband was FIreman. He also repaired appliances on his days off. He made more off the repair gig than being a FIreman.

You can find a lot of refrigerator parts on ebay. The guy that delivered our new fridge and took away the old one was a private contractor/installer for Lowes. He took a look at our old fridge and said, "I'll get the good parts off it and sell them on ebay".
Sure enough, just about every part you would need to build a new fridge from scratch for cheap is on ebay.

Bad for you, but great story. A repairman told me one time, "Never buy an appliance from a cell phone company." That's just what he said... Our stove at the mountain house is a Samsung Propane stove and it has been great for the 7-8 years we have had it.

Sure enough, just about every part you would need to build a new fridge from scratch for cheap is on ebay. I had a buddy at one of our power plants and what he did for a side gig was buy the old appliances that everyone has hauled off back to Lowes when they bring you a new one. He takes them and fixes them and has a little shop at a crossroads in southern Mississippi and re-sells them there. H made so much money doing it, he retired from the company with his pension and now does it as a retirement gig.

She bought a Samsung French door with the freezer on the bottom. I keep telling anyone who will listen, Samsung is crap. My son knew this, but his wife insisted on buying a Samsung because it had the "cool" features at a price they could afford. Three weeks after buying it, the ice maker froze up and flooded the kitchen and laundry room. I've always done good the LG or Whirlpool.

I have a 1960 model Hotpoint in my outside utility room. Runs like champ and never had to work on it other than defrost once every couple of years. I bought it used for $100 in '83.

Buy Bosch money well spent. Our last fridge was to replace a 5 year old whirlpool. The lady kept telling me I neede another whirlpool. I told her no I wanted the cheapest made they had and I would get the extended warranty. Went with a Medea with same features with no issues going into year 3

I have been told they don’t even make the Samsung repair manuals available in English. No clue if that’s true.

Repair guys have told me similar, do not buy Samsung due to parts availability and support issues. And on a similar note, those dang in-door ice makers are the worst. i have replaced 2 in the last 5 years. Next fridge will only have ice in the freezer. Fridge is a Whirlpool, so it was easy to diagnose and get parts myself.

We also bought a Samsung washer and dryer about 10 years ago. Cuss it everytime the chime noise goes off and keeps a going. Repair service says it can not be cut off or changed. It's been a good set, but don't get to comfy watching tv, causes you may be up and down a few times balancing the washer. Want my agitator back like old one. Never seen a washer sound like a bronco trying to tear the wall down!
