I haven't had to buy any auto parts recently, but when I got ready to bring my Jeep down here to the coast, I hadn't driven it in a long while and of course the battery was dead. I jumped it off, drove it down to Advanced Auto in Fort Payne and had the battery checked out and sure enough I needed a new one, so I got it, swapped it out and figured it was all good. 2013 Jeep Rubicon's don't have an voltmeter by the way.... Anyway, I drive it 6.5 hours down here and run around here for a few days and think nothing of it until I get ready to crank it one morning and nothing. So I figure I must have strained the old (possibly original) alternator. So I take it off and go down to the Advanced Auto in Gulf Shores to have it tested and get another one. The guy tests it out and sure enough it's bad, so he prices me a new one and it's $277 with my military discount. I said, "Give me the cheapest one." He says, "That is the cheapest one. We have them all the way to $500." Damn. I seem to remember stuff like starters and alternators used to be less than $100 bucks. I must be getting like my granddad, bitchin' about how much everything costs now a days. I know how he felt. I just priced a driver’s door lock actuator on my Tundra with 45k miles….sealed, now, so they can’t be rebuilt…$378
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I retired 7 years ago after 51 years in automotive repair and it hurts not being able to buy at wholesale anymore. When most parts houses went to lifetime warranty and very little was rebuilt, prices had to go up. When alternators first came out you could buy all the parts to repair them. Same with starters. Not anymore

I buy online if I have the time. Typically 1/2 price for the same brand of part and 1/3 for a non-branded part. Specifically, I have had good luck with a non-branded alternator in my farm truck. Maybe wouldn't go that cheap if it was a daily driver but it's worked a couple years now with no problems. Ease of replacement also figures in on going cheap and in my 97 Chevy it's an easily accessible part if it does fail.

Batteries are out of sight. I just replaced a heater hose assembly and hood latch on an F150. Mechanics earn their money.

Not anymore At least the one I bought has a lifetime warrantee on it. I remember when I was young going down Southern Armature in downtown Birmingham and they would take the old one you brought in and rebuilt it for you while you waited.

Ease of replacement also figures in on going cheap and in my 97 Chevy it's an easily accessible part if it does fail. I put so many water pumps on a 5.7 Vortec I could do it in a little over an hour. Hardest part was getting the fan clutch off the first time.

I had a buddy couldn't break the fan clutch loose, he put a wrench on it and said bump the motor. I said he'll no, move over. Till this day, I think about him turning a flip or loosing an an arm or hand. Ssshhh, bump the motor, my lord.

Even a plain Wix oil filter costs almost double now what it did a year ago
The left lane is for the the purpose of moving the flow of traffic forward regardless of the speed limit. If your impeding the flow of traffic get your ass in the right lane. It's really that simple...

TJ water pump boned me for $90 last weekend. Been about 6 years since replacing one in an xj and it was less than half that as best I remember

It's because they know people are hanging on to their vehicles and will need parts to keep them going. So just another way to gouge the man trying to save some money, jack up the prices because their is a demand. Saw a you tube video where the new f-150's have led tail light assy that has to be replaced as the entire tail light assy. Cost is $1700.00. can't just replace the light board. I guess they are crapping out the entire light board. Will keep my 2013 F-150 till I die!

Hardest part was getting the fan clutch off the first time. I've replaced mine only once (knock on wood) and I was also surprised at how easy it was relatively speaking. I did screw up and missed the gasket on one side with the bolt and in a way I guess I've done it twice now...

Everytime I needed one I was in a pinch and just got what the parts store had. They were good for 2-3 years then they'd start dripping out of the weephole. If you haven't already replaced the quick connect coolant lines going to the intake, do that now. Learned that one the hard way too.

I paid $68 for a water pump two weeks ago. As far as getting the fan clutch off, put tension on the pulley, and smack the wrench with a hammer and it should pop loose.
