So, for folks that have quotes or recently had it done. You will need trees, prep work, let's say one chemical spray, labor to plant trees, and someone to oversea process. What are we looking at it cost total per acre for pine tree plantings now?

Short leaf or loblolly or long leaf ?

Isn’t there some short leaf and long leaf initiatives.

Depends on herbicides used, application method, tree seedling species and quality. Standard 2nd Gen loblolly from chemical site prep to trees in the ground should run you around $250/acre.

Paint rock, there are nurseries around that sell them and grow them. But it is my understanding that you will need to wait till next year because you are almost out or the window for planting this year. The trees can not be pulled by the nurseries once they come out of their winter dormant stage.

National Resource Conservation Service sometimes has programs that will pay a big part of the cost.

When I was in high school, I got a crew of friends together and we planted pines for my pop over the holiday break on several small plots. He bought the dibbles and bags from Forestry Suppliers and ordered the trees from the nurseries. We had a fun time doing it and really made some memories.

Seeing what it costs now, I reckon I am going to do the same thing with my kids.

We planted longleaf on one plot and they were a pain. They were bare root and took twice as long as the loblolly pines to get in the ground.

My dad also had me running a crew of tree planters as soon as I could drive. Planting trees is backbreaking work. Really cool though as I have harvested several tracts where I planted the trees. I write a check for replanting with a smile on my face!!!!

I still have a couple dibbles but they are used for planting bulbs and other garden work. I get the urge to plant a bundle of white oaks but so far have resisted.
