Agree on a good student/study Bible and "The Bible Recap".
Also, the best advice I can give you is to understand the context behind EVERYTHING you read in the Bible. A quote I often hear is "A text without context is just a pretext to anything you want it to mean". It's why so many passages are misunderstood or misinterpreted (or sometimes intentionally misrepresented). Remember, the Bible was written for you, but it was not written to you. Any time you're reading the Bible, you need to start by asking (and answering) 3 questions:
1. Who is doing the writing?
2. Who are they writing to?
3. Why are they writing it? Great advice here.

Just like the title says. Some of us older folks never grew up in a religious environment. So when we are old and start sitting in Sunday School, the discussion is usually involved with those who are already experienced in religion and the Bible. They assume all those attending in the same age group have been involved so to speak. But after reading aldeer, it's obvious that humans have various interpretations of the Bible. Is there one book out there that provides the basics? One would think the Bible does, but your discussion on here proves otherwise. The book "Defined" by the Kendricks is very good and I'd recommend it. DEFINED

3. Why are they writing it? absolutely correct advice here. this is known as the inductive method of Bibical interpretation. just let the text speak for itself. the Bible doesn't teach anything it simply says what is says. believe what it says

Of course the Bible, but there are versions that are best for study and there are versions best suited just for reading and understanding.
I would also suggest the Jeffersonian Bible or "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth" by Thomas Jefferson.
I would hold off reading anything like "Letters from Earth" by Mark Twain until you have a good foundation in your faith. Let's just say that Mark Twain poses some interesting questions...

there is only one Bible sealed by the King of kings and thats the King james Bible LOL While the KJV of the Bible is a great version it is FAR from the best to study and sure not easy to read. why do folks say its hard to read. most of the new Testament in the kjb comes from tyndales work and his goal was for the common man to have a Bible.tyndale said he would have a plow bow know more of the scripture than the popery of Rome. are you saying than serf farmers from 4 and 500 years ago are more intelligent than folks today are. the king james is written in 6th grade English. john 3:16 king james. for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. see that wasn't hard was it?

This may seem elementary but.... My opinion is if you have a desire to learn more about religion/Bible dont overlook the most important which is "seeking a person/Christ". This is not near as complex as we make it and I am talking to myself also. The bible says we should have a "childlike faith". I believe if we get our relationship with the Creator where it should be the rest will fall where it should. With that being said....learning about the bible/religion is a noble goal but dont do us much good if our relationship is not intact.

A good confession or catechism can be a useful tool for understanding how the Bible teaches regarding specific subjects. I hope it's ok to post a link to one. If not, mods please remove this. Realize that most are denominational specific, so there will be some things that others will disagree with. But most things should be universally believed among Christians.
