I'm thinking about taking Drew and my friend's son up there for the youth hunt. Any pointers (areas to avoid, etc) would be appreciated cause it would be their first deer kill.

Just a friendly reminder that Saturday is the only day of the four listed as a youth gun hunt on the UD.
I'll probably be there that morning with one of my daughters.
Without knowing how much you know about that WMA and considering the white oak acorn crop is minimal in the swamp this year, I would suggest trying to find some water oaks that are dropping and hanging with them as long as your youth hunter can sit.
Stalking down any of the many dry sloughs that cross the main roads is a good way find to where the deer -- and hogs -- are crossing.
There are usually water oaks growing on the slight ridges running parallel with these sloughs, too. White oak, overcup and a few swamp chestnut oaks are also found on these ridges, and if you happen to find one of them dropping nuts this year, set up camp and don't leave until you have to.
Finally, the roads running off the powerline and north toward the river are good places to stalk and look for acorn trees.
The woods on either side of these roads are generally open and many times I've seen deer by slowly working my way toward the river.
If you see an oak tree, ease in and check it for falling acorns.
That place is so big and deer can be just about anywhere, so I have found that being willing to move almost always results in more sightings.
Just be courteous to other hunters if they happen to already be in the area. There is plenty of swamp for everyone.

I'm pretty familiar with it from chasing hogs. The places I have seen deer recently have been influenced by the presence of people so it will be a crap shoot. I hunted the river side of the power line yesterday with no luck and acorns were scarce. I'm thinking about trying above the creek where the gas line is cutoff by the creek, saw some white oaks back there that were dropping a few weeks ago. get there early. i know a few that know about some white oaks in that area and will be there for the hunt.

If they want to beat me they better have their asses in the woods by 3am.

My advice is go by boat.

I could, just haven't scouted any of the upper delta by boat. I know a few places just north of 65 that looked decent last year but haven't thought about it this year.

Why so late?

For some reason I can't remember so I thought this would be a good place to ask...Can people still bow hunt a WMA during a youth gun hunt, or are they closed off to youth only? I'm talking about people that are not participating in the youth hunt.

No bow hunting on gun days if I recall correctly

I won't give specific places, but going by boat increases your kill chances dramatically. There are lots of places where water causes deer and hogs to funnel through specific places. Makes scouting super easy when you find those pinch points.
