Prob Won’t be much more than what you left in it if no contributions by you since you left. Good luck finding it tho. It may take some effort but you should be able to track it down.

If it’s invested in something that got 10% per year for 30 years it could be worth much more than he put in. If he put in $1000, it could be worth $17k now.

Keep us updated. I would like yo look in to this myself. I paid in on one for like 10 years. That company was bought out and no one could ever tell us anything about our 401k

I guess you are right if it’s still being actively managed. I just know that an orphaned 401k sometimes does not grow much.

So. My wife and I both have over 100. This is legit ? To claim. Yes. After I filled out all the stuff online, they emailed me some more forms to fill out.

It is legit. You can go to the Alabama State Treasury website and there is a link there for unclaimed property that takes you to the site.

This just sounds fishy to me. I entered my info an it shows that my mortgage company has something over $100 for me to claim. If I click on claim I have to enter too much personal info, including social security number. I backed out....

I filled out the three lines and it said I had seven with four of them being those Allstate good driver reward checks that get thrown to the side. They all totaled up close to what I spent on ten bags of peas and a pallet of fertilizer last week.

I put money in a 401k almost 30yrs ago for a year or two. What happened to that money? Do any of yall know a legit way to find out about it? Some stuff pops up on the interweb but i dont want to start putting my personal info out there willy nilly. I asked a friend of mine who is in the 401k business and this is what he said, “ If the company went out of the business, the plan probably terminated. If the plan terminated, all assets were distributed. If the balance was small enough, it was swept as fees. If they had an address, they mailed a check. If the assets went unclaimed for long enough there were a few things that could have happened: (1) The plan established an IRA in the name of the participant and rolled over the funds. (2) The funds were sent to the state unclaimed property fund. That’s called escheatment. (3) The money was forfeited and reallocated to other participants in the plan. It depends on when the company went out of business. But it’s likely you’ll never find that money if it’s been any length of time and you’ve never received any notifications of what they did with the funds.”

Thanks for posting this. I ran my name with no city or zip code and it came up with 3 properties over $100!! I believe they are legit as well because the reporting businesses name for each are businesses I have used in the past (Comcast, etc...)

My first employer put profit sharing into an account managed by Fidelity. It was invested into a S&P 500 mutual fund. When I left them, I had forgotten about it. Fast forward, my current employer has their 401k account managed by Fidelity. At my first meeting to setup a 401k account, he asked for my SSN and DOB. That's when he discovered that old account. In almost 30 years, it had grown to $16,000. So it may pay to find out who administered your old 401k.

My son used the "fltreasurehunt.gov" site about 6 months ago and put my name in and it showed several amounts most around $60 to $200 under my name and forwarded the site to me. There were about 8 different individual amounts, all from Medical insurance payments that somehow had not been sent to my office when in practice. I filled out a simple form and received a check for about have of the funds in a few weeks. The others required filling out an additional forms and submitting a few more verifications via mail and those are waiting to be processed since September 2025. They are apparently backlogged.
