I asked a friend of mine who is in the 401k business and this is what he said, “ If the company went out of the business, the plan probably terminated. If the plan terminated, all assets were distributed.

If the balance was small enough, it was swept as fees. If they had an address, they mailed a check.

If the assets went unclaimed for long enough there were a few things that could have happened:

(1) The plan established an IRA in the name of the participant and rolled over the funds.
(2) The funds were sent to the state unclaimed property fund. That’s called escheatment.
(3) The money was forfeited and reallocated to other participants in the plan.

It depends on when the company went out of business. But it’s likely you’ll never find that money if it’s been any length of time and you’ve never received any notifications of what they did with the funds.”
