2 questions....(this will primarily be for an inshore saltwater spinning setup for artificial lures)
1. straight braid or use a mono leader (if leader, how long?). will a leader be a problem trying to cast lures? (thinking about the knot having to go through the eyes)
2. I have a partial spool of braid left over after spooling up a frog rod and then a full spool I haven't opened yet. The partial one is not enough to fill the spinning reel, but I hate to waste it. Can I finish off the partial spool first, then finish it out with the new one and connect them with a double-uni knot (or some other knot) or is that a bad idea and I should just use the new spool and not connect sections?

Typically use 20# suffix 832 with a 3-5' fluoro leader. I change the # on the leader depending on the application. I'll go as low as 15# for bumping jigs in clear water and up to 30# for throwing big topwaters in the surf. You can typically get away with line splices in the spool if theyre pretty deep. Otherwise you're asking for wind knots or heartbreak with a long run from a big red or jack.

You can typically get away with line splices in the spool if theyre pretty deep. Otherwise you're asking for wind knots or heartbreak with a long run from a big red or jack. I may give it a shot....to be quite honest, I don't really know how much is on it. It was a 300yd spool to start and I filled up a baitcaster on a frog rod, so I'd be shocked if there's more than 150yds left, maybe not even that much. I'll probably go ahead and try it and it see how it goes

Also, i bought a couple of cheap salt water spinning reels off ebay, neither made it through one jack. Bass rod and reel we were using to catch bait fell to a 20min fight with a big jack, also killed the fish. Youll be miles ahead to invest in a good Penn spinning reel suited for catching big fish. Youre gona buy one either way, best to just start out with one. Me being cheap caused me alot of trouble

I've been using "decent" bass rods so far and I rinse them thoroughly after each use and haven't had any trouble yet. If/when one of them blows up on me I'll probably buy something a little better. I'm fishing from a kayak and even a slot red will pull me around....being in the kayak almost acts as a secondary "drag" system. As long as they run and don't dive, you can outlast some pretty good size fish just letting them pull you until they wear down. Most of my inshore spots are super shallow so there's very little diving

If you havent, you really need to take your kayak out to the fort at ft morgan and fish around the point. But i would have a big rod with a big popper tied on it with me. When a school of jacks comes by, youll be in for a wild ride

It is a hard knot to learn how to tie but gets much easier after you practice. This knot will slide through the guides easier than other knots. Your mono leader lb test is specific to what you will be fishing for.

When a school of jacks comes by, youll be in for a wild ride Caught one there back in '23 on a nearshore charter. That was absolutely the hardest fighting fish i've ever reeled in. I'd say 7' spinning with a 3 or 4000 series reel.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Pound per pound one of the hardest fighting fish that swims. They do not know the word "quit". Hook a big one on 10-15 or even 20lb mono and matching tackle and you'll be cussing them long before you land them. At least with heavier braid, you can put the heat on them and deal with them much quicker.

Making a weekend trip with some friends of ours. He and I fish together regularly but he’s never fished saltwater. Hoping to get him on a few reds.

The fg is a fine knot but a pain in the ass to tie. I use the Alberto its plenty strong but quick to tie

The fg is a fine knot but a pain in the ass to tie. I use the Alberto its plenty strong but quick to tie I agree, I've been tying the Fat Alberto for 20 years at least. its a good strong, small knot.

With a little practice, tying the FG knot can be mastered pretty easily. It never breaks and is great for sliding right through the guides without the use of a swivel. Some of the other knots mentioned here work well but are a little more bulky.
