Trying to do some research before I purchase a fence for the dog. Looking at some options with a collar and a GPS fencing system. Any recommendations?

The 2 people I know that have them have good luck with them. I think theirs has a wire buried and the area. Only kicker is dogs can still come in. I don’t know which brands are best.

We used the petsafe wireless collar system and it worked great for our lab. It took him about a day to figure out where the boundaries were. I actually put the unit for sale on marketplace last week. the collar is missing but one can be purchased at walmart.

I have this system for my 4 dogs and it works well except for the rare occasion when one of my male dogs sees a much disliked neighbor dog in it's own yard, across the blacktop and inside a chain link fence. He hates that dog and runs through the shock from the collar without a thought. That's about 3 times a year and that's on the dog, not the system. One thing of note is that spare collars are a big help. I have 3 replaceable battery collars and 4 rechargeable units. This way I can keep a collar on each dog while recharging the other collar.

What kind of dog youre trying to keep in the yard has alot to do with how successful the fence will be. Some dogs train/learn easily, some dont. If you have a stbborn dog that is made to chase tbings away, you might not ever keep it in the yard. Their instinct will be stronger than tbe shock. Working dogs, made to be trained and obey commands usually do really well with the electric fences. Thats been my experience anyhow, being in a different yard every day and using one myself.

Eclectic dog fences seem like an overkill. I prefer the more natural ones that don’t draw attention to them. No one wants a dog fence that says “Hey look at me!!”

For eclectic ideas on dog fences, I would go to Pinterest. Probably lots of different styles and color ideas.

Unless you have some little undetermined breed of dog, DON'T TRUST ANY OF THE ELECTRONIC CRAP. A couple of weeks back we lost one of the best dogs I've ever had, Skeeter. He was 50/50 border collie/aussie. One heck of a fine pup. Had the Petsafe "determined dog" collar on him and the battery had been replaced that very morning. My wife and I were both away and Skeet decided to run down a delivery truck, ran thru the joke of a "fence" and it cost him his life. We've both grieved over this one ever since. Don't trust any strong willed dog you value to gimmicks, get a real fence.

If your dog is big, stubborn and hard headed, and wants to go visit the neighbors dogs or chase a deer or squirrel he sees outside the fence, all the elec fence is going to do is notify you when he comes and goes. A yelp when he leaves, and a yelp when he comes back home. I think it would work very well on smaller, more timid or fairly submissive dogs, but if you've got an alpha male for a pup, it's not going to stop him if he really wants to go investigate or chase something. It's nothing more than a "nip" when he goes through and a "nip" when he comes back. Not a real deterrent for a determined dog.

Dang Ridge, sorry to hear this. Losing any pup is rough. I lost mine 2 years ago. Finally was ready to get another. I had a hard time feeling like I was replacing a great friend.

What everyone is saying, it’s all on the temperament of the dog. Had a pair of dachshunds years ago, the female would run right through screaming all the way when she wanted to chase a bird, bee, wasp or helicopter. She ended up getting out and run over. The male dog was so scared of it he wouldn’t leave it even when he didn’t have his collar on. Just put up a wireless system for our new mini schnauzer and she is training real well to it.

Yeah, we took it hard. Skeet had a personality that would be hard to find in another dog. This year we started with three collies and an smaller inside pup. The two female collies got bit by a rattler in the summer and we lost the younger one. Now Skeeter is gone. The old momma collie, Lynzie, is pretty much alone now when she's out. At 11 years old, she has no interest in getting out of the yard. We've been spending as much time with her as possible and let her in frequently.

Pet safe 3/4 acre E fence. I have two collars. Keep one on charge.
Works even on stubborn dogs MOST of the time. I’ve seen my dog, hunker down, take the shock, and follow one of my kids off JUST a few times at first. She’s learned it’s not worth it.

Was fishing in Coosa county last 2 days; had a very good Mexican dinner in Eclectic at El Gran Rodeo. Very reasonale price, also.

We have a spot on gps collar. I spent time training my dog when she's gets shocked to get on the porch. She has about 2 acres to roam. I was able to put a fence inside on the main one. No more dog in the garden.

What’s the battery life with the spot on? I’d love to have a GPS one, but most were just 24-48 hours.
