If you live around one of the (was) coal-fired steam plants, you should have known this was coming. They had to spend millions, if not billions, converting them from coal to gas AND running the gas pipe overland to supply the plants. And I imagine all that was done to meet environmental regulations put into place by those elected. The only ones coming out of this without a smile is those of us in the middle. There is truth to this. The bottom line is the reason everyone's power bills are higher is the Government. The problem is in many cases the Government changes hands. Sometimes that Government changes every 4 years. Does anyone realize how long it takes to conceptualize a new air pollution control system, integrate it into an existing system. get all the approvals, design the damned thing, get it all fabricated, shipped, built, inspected, tested and put into actual use? What? And then the next administration comes in and basically says, "Naw, you don't have to do any of that stuff." But you know the next 4 years it may be the total opposite and they want you to build solar panels. What the hell do you do? How much effort do you think it takes to convert a plant from burning coal to burning natural gas? I can tell you because I managed those projects, it takes a lot of reengineering and a lot of time. Now imagine you had to do all these projects and try to figure out what the ever changing government wants from you every 4 years... It's not an easy thing. I've lived it for 40 years.

Several folks local to me on Facebook said theirs was in the 7-800.00 range this time.
We have gas thank the lord. We don’t run our central during the winter and ours was 400.00 😳

Irish don’t try to play the poor us gag, Every major industry in this country has to play that same bullshit game. Just look to the offshore oil industry, politicians try to kill it all the time and developing an ultra deepwater find makes putting a cogeneration plant online seem like child’s play.

The high prices you see today will be the norm going forward probably. With the infrastructure needed for these AI data centers and more LNG plants coming online, this is a recipe for disaster for the consumer. These data centers basically amount to a new city being built in a short amount of time so utility companies are scrambling to get new infrastructure in place to power them and we are going to pay for it. The new LNG plants in Texas and Louisiana will be the destination for a ton of US Natural gas as the price for gas in Asia and Japan is over 3 times what it is here in the US. Limited pipeline capacity is also another factor. There’s tons of natural gas in the Permian but it’s destined for the Gulf Coast in the future as there’s WAY more money in exporting it than keeping it here. As more gas leaves the US, the surplus declines which leads to higher prices. And when the gas prices rise, you get the added “fees” on top of your normal usage. People are also seeing “delivery” fees added in which is the additional costs utility companies are paying to get their gas in a pipeline. Until the US makes these data centers be self sufficient with their own power generation, we are going to bear the brunt of making these companies even richer!!!

It’s the definition of a monopoly. What choices do you have besides paying it? The GOV wants you to spend $ chasing those magical “energy savers”. Spend more money on your house to save money on your bill….🙄

If you think you want to install your own solar system to get away from them, you have to pay Alabama Power as well even if they have nothing to do with it. That itself is wrong on many levels.
