This summer, a buddy of mine put me on a pretty good deal for a classic rifle. A Win 70 made in 1977 (one year younger than me) in 375 H&H Mag. I wanted one for the longest time in my adolescence, after reading about the cartridge's exploits on elk, moose, and African game in the sporting magazines. This one was in good shape and was topped with a vintage fixed 4x32 german scope. I handload, so I quickly began researching bullets to develop a load. Turns out that most .375 bullets are considered too hard to adequately expand on light game, but two Speer offering were were reported soft enough to expand on southern whitetails, and to my surprise, the old scope adjusted and held zero while testing. Both the 235 and the 270 Speers shot well in the rifle and after a second round of testing to confirm small groups (and getting me used to the recoil), I went to work trying to find a deer to Christen it with.
My deer season was a bit flat, and I passed on a few small does with it around the holidays. I did manage to kill a yearling doe with my 308 on New Year's Eve, but when I had the 375 nothing showed, or nothing that seemed worthy of that fine old rifle appeared. I was beginning to think it wasn't going to happen and had already decided that a scrawny doe would have to do when it all came together Saturday evening in grand fashion. A few minutes before the end of shooting light, an old warrior walked into the plot. The rifle came to the shoulder like an old friend and even though that vintage scope didn't help much with ambient light, I could easily see that those creamy antlers were high above his head and well past his ears. When he dropped his head for another bite of wheat and clover, the crosshairs settled behind the crease and sent a perfectly placed 235 gr Sierra Hot Cor bullet howling through his lungs. He managed three big hops and crashed just in the edge of the woods. I knew he was good, but didn't know exactly how good until the flashlight framed him in the leaf litter.
That fine old warrior was an outstanding first kill with that fine old rifle. He is my personal best buck and a memory that I'm quite sure I'll take to the grave. It's hunts like that that make all the time, effort, money, practice, early mornings, and late evenings worth it. A subtle reminder of the past and of simpler times.

I've been fiddling with loading the 250 Sierra GK in my 375, but didn't get it dialed in in time for a hunt this year.
Maybe next year....
