Processing fees are double what they were a couple of years ago for starters. Inflation since Covid has put a hurting on the average Joe in the woods. I know several people that have held off shooting does for this reason and a lot of hunters usually give some away to friends and family. Opposite for me. Process my own deer and haven’t had to buy any hamburger or steak all fall or winter. Big grocery bill savings. Even at the processor you are saving money vs buying beef.

You sure that's what I said?? That may not be verbatim , but you made a statement to that effect when we were discussing the two very warm spells around Christmas. As far as cold weather , we had a stretch of single digit nights and highs 12-15 January '24 and '25 up here. But "years" is plural . Nothing new up here. https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/cities/scottsboro/year-2024https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/cities/scottsboro/year-2025

My observation is it’s a good thing the season is so long. There’s not that many truly great days to hunt. Most days the wind blows from every point on the compass.

Na. Nobody wants to put in the work to shoot em. So did that just radically change from the last few years??.....Folks just suddenly stopped wanting to put the work in this season?? It’s a mind exercise. People see fewer deer? They kill fewer deer. I know very few ppl who changed hunting tactics this year, but continued to hunt the same way they always had, despite the conditions we were handed. It led to fewer dead deer. Myself included, the whole family hunted less this year as well. I know other folks who did the same. Yep , I posted upstream about it, seemed like less hunting up here this year . I asked several other hunters and many agreed , it just doesn't seem like as many folks hitting the woods this year. I think they all took up duck hunting

Considering the upper Midwest gun hunting seasons are very short yet kill as many if not more deer Sometimes drawing out a long season could be detrimental I remember back I the early 90s talk of studies and families impact from hunting. Hunting widows was one term I’d heard of. I recall some studies with hunter involved questionnaires about how often one hunts etc…. States like Arkansas stated closing duck hunting on Thanksgiving and Christmas so hunters would stay home with their families. Alabama opened duck hunting on Thanksgiving for a few years but moved it to the Friday after. Todays world kids have so many activities and parents and grandparents are intertwined with those activities accounts for less hunters Also some studies suggest instantaneous gratification is a problem. The term light switch kids was coined. Basically generations have grown up flipping a switch and instant accessibility. Never learning patience and sitting there with nothing happening which gets boring. It’s why I never liked a shooting house over a field. Get off in the woods and become a part of the outdoors. Actually learn funnels and reading sign. These days folks plant a field and sit and wait to shoot. Really not hunting in its purest form Sometimes change is not good. We’ve gone from hunting to farming for deer

People only have a few plots , whereas there are thousands of oaks on a property . Ya gotta know which tree or grove of trees to sit under. Sitting in an open stand is waaaaaay different than sitting in a shooting house. I could go on .............

At this point no matter what happens he’s left himself enough wiggle room to make sure his “predictions” are right when it all comes out or he can look back next year and say I told you so. He says he wants discussion but until everyone agrees with him he’ll never be satisfied.

The hunting experience is totally different Correct, you can learn a lot sitting in the woods. I've seen a wealth of interesting things from all wildlife , not just deer in 50+ years in the woods. You need a different level of shooting skills as well, that's not learned shooting on a bench at the range. Just because it may not be long distance doesn't mean it can't be difficult .

This brings up memory of my wife’s nephew wanting to come hunting with me. I’d guess 20 years ago and he was maybe 12-13. I asked him what he wanted to hunt. Duck hunting was tops. He’d been watching lots of hunting shows and that looked the most fun. Bear in mind this kid lived in south Florida and hadn’t even been around a gun. I asked about deer hunting and him saying well there’s nothing to that. You sit in a house wand watch a field, you shoot a deer. I took him duck hunting in the morning and deer hunting that next evening.
The next day we slept in and went squirrel hunting with dogs. That was his favorite type of hunting.
I think deer hunting is the most difficult IF one doesn’t sit a field while in a house. I’m not dissing that at all, it’s just not experiencing the world around you and listening for all the subtle clues. Figuring out the puzzle and so forth.
These days using all the technology kinda changes the expectations. I think that’s a bad thing. Used to look at the sign and try and figure out the bucks and how big etc… from the sign they’re making. Now put cell cam on it and get instant pics etc…. Then they get named and put on the save or the hit list. Now it lessons the wonderment of what is out there. I think that’s kinda where we’re at. I think taking the mystery out kinda kills the zest or maybe that’s my older cynical self hating change. 🤷♂️
I guess where I’m going with this. I think there fewer hunters in the woods year after year
