What Shotgun/Buckshot-load/Choke combination are you deer hunting with this year?
What is the minimum effective buckshot pattern standard you use to determine the maximum range at which you will a shot?
Please limit this discussion to buckshot - no rifles, slugs, etc.

I shot a Rem 870 3" 12ga and #1 buck for many years...40 yard gun
I had a post72' Win mod 12 2 3/4 that shot 2 3/4 mag 000 into a five inch pattern at 35 yards...an honest all day every day 50 yard gun...maybe more.
Max range is what ever you gun/ammo combo will put a LOT of pellets into a paper plate EVERY TIME. Bigger pellets make bigger holes.
now for my opinion...GETY A DAMN RIFLE, ANY DAMN RIFLE. The weekend in 1972n er so that I lost TWO big bucks with buckshot, both under 40 yards, convinced me that buckshot is way too inconsistant for me to shoot deer with.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I got a moss. 500 with a 30 inch full choke barrell it will pattern good with about any load, but the 2 3'4" magnum 00 12 pellet and 2 3'4" 000 8 pellet will do about 8 inches at 40 yards. took me a long time to find this one and alot of loads. pattern, pattern, pattern is all I can tell you, try diffrent loads in diffrent guns till u find what you like. Where I hunt in chambers county shotguns is all we use, I have seen BS flat tear up a deer and I also have seen them never bleed a drop. I have a love and hate relationship with BS.

There are times and places for rifles as well as times and places for shotguns. Following the line of argument presented, a negative experience 40 years ago with a scoped rifle could be grounds for rejecting the use of glass sights on any firearm thereafter. Indeed, there have been many major game changing improvements in buckshot patterning, penetration and and effective range since 1972!

I use Dixie Tri-Ball Buckshot from Tight patterns, complete penetration, leaves a blood trail - seldom needed - and the .60" 325 grain buckshot pellets will bust through the gristle shield of big hog. Tight patterns = <6" at 40 yards.

Winchester Super-x 00, 3" through Benelli M2 with full choke. I have pattened them all, and this seems work the best for me. Some people that I hunt with, will only use copper plated. I have seen no advantage to them when patterning. This load at 40 yrds, dead right there, every time. 50 yards dead, but might have to track. 60 yrds is where it starts to get risky. One pellet in the vitals is all it takes, but should try for 3+ in vitals for clean kill.
I have shot other loads that were tighter, but this has been the most consistant for me. With some loads, I was getting string pattens, or circular patterns where there were few pellets in the center of target. This should be avoided.
I tried Winchester 00 3" through a xxx full Comp-n-Choke, in my Winchester 1300 and got all 15 pellets in a 12" circle at 40 yds. I do not hunt with this load, because that takes away the advantage of having a shotgun if you have to aim it like a rifle. But if that is what you are looking for then give it a try.
