Idea: maybe start wrapping them in aluminum foil and set them on the wood stove to thaw.

Nope - next time I'll just put it out there on a stump and let nature do its thing. If something is willing to eat the nasty thing I'm confident the recommended cooking temperature won't matter. If Mauser doesn't like it he can go kill something.
