I have a dumpster at my office that is serviced by Waste Management. After seeing some things about WM scamming customers by charging overage fees, I dug into our invoices, and was shocked. My December dumpster bill, for a 1/2 dumpster picked up weekly, was $707. I called my cousin whos business has a bigger dumpster picked up twice weekly, and his was like $300 a month from a local company. Office manager calls this local service, and they quote us $145 a month, same weekly service. After 3 days of trying to get in touch with WM, finally get a response that I am under contract until June 2026, and I would need to fill out a bunch of paperwork requesting discontinuation of service. I asked them to provide me copies of any contract they have for my business, because in 6 years of me owning it, I haven't signed any agreement with them. They started waffling, and eventually said they were authorized to price match the $145 I was quoted by the local company. Seems awful shady business practices.

We went through the same deal. We were under contract and ended up paying. We had the other company set their dumpster beside the WM dumpster and had the receptionist watch security video. Every time WM skipped a haul, even though it was empty, we deducted it from the bill and had video proof. We played this game until the contract expired and they came and got their box.

Had the same issue. We bought out of our contact with them and went with another company

We played that same game with biohazardous medical waste disposal as well!!

The big companies deal in volume, have the name/brand recognition and use bully tactics.

It's similar to Big Pharma or other monster companies with individuals. We're big, you're not, we tell you what to do once you're in our system, and getting out will be a nightmare until you finally just give up.

It must be expensive. A now-defunct clinic from Andalusia back in 05-06 got busted for dumping that stuff in the Conecuh Nat Forest. I found the giant pile of it on a routine survey and reported it. Rangers came out and took over from there. Not sure how it ended, but I think that clinic owner got a massive fine and maybe some jail time.

Same exact thing with us too. Swapped to another company at a fraction of the cost. WM is VERY DEI and that comes at a cost.

Walker county has threatened to go with them instead of operating the service themselves. If they do, they plan to try and make it where you have no choice to do business with them and them alone.

Yep. They told me that it was auto occurring unless we sent a letter to them for cancellation two months before the date to make sure it didn’t auto renew.
We set a reminder in our phone so it was just as cheap to pay them another six months then change.
And that is what we did. And now have another company. 145 a month for one dump a week.

Had a long handle keep top from closing all the way once and they tried to charge me an overfill fine. I told them to come get the dumpster and they removed the fine.

If it has anything to do with "medical" the price triples at a minimum!

There’s a reason many refer to WM as the “Waste Mafia”

I fought that battle with WM about 7-8 years ago, and took their matched rate (as it was cheaper to go that route than pay to cancel service early), but didn't renew service after that. They will jack your rate up the moment you look away, as stated above they are crooks. Been with another company ever since, and have been well pleased.

A veterinarian doesn't have any medical waste.

Pretty sure a vet's office is considered a "generator of biohazardous medical waste"

Biohazardous Waste Disposal and Veterinarians
While doctors' offices and hospitals must diligently follow biohazardous medical waste regulations and have for decades, some veterinarian facilities and practitioners have shown a lack of vigilance in this respect.

In a veterinary environment, biohazardous waste is found in as many of the types of waste produced in the care of humans. For example:

Sharps – sharps such as needles and scalpels, slides, lancets and so forth can carry and transmit infectious materials in animal care scenarios just as easily as in human healthcare situations.

Solid waste – veterinarians use many of the same supplies as human doctors, such as bandages, linens, towels, table draping, swabs, and surgical gauze that can also contain infected blood or body fluids from an animal.

Tissue or pathological waste – veterinary offices perform tissue biopsies, surgeries, and amputations, just as human physicians do, and such waste must be properly disposed of to prevent infection risks.

Review the regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regarding hazardous waste. If your veterinary facility or practice produces biohazardous waste, you must comply with the Standards Applicable to Generators of Hazardous Waste found in Part 262 of Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations or CFR.

It doesn’t matter if biohazardous waste comes from humans or animals – it must be disposed of safely and properly. Know the federal and state regulations for veterinary practices. You might be surprised to learn just how many agencies are involved in your animal waste! They include:


Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
Department of Transportation (DOT)

The American Veterinary Medical Association offers additional information regarding both federal and state regulatory guidance for animal wastes. Be aware that OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Standards are just as applicable to veterinary facilities as they are for hospitals and doctor’s offices. Follow the rules to avoid fines and penalties for non-compliance.

I've spent a lot of time in a Vet's office, as a worker (unpaid), as a customer (paying) and as a patient-Yep, a patient!! ( I never got to go to a "real doctor", my father just weighed me and measured out the animal med for my body weight and that's what I got, I even got wormed once a year and almost got an ear-tag but thankfully my mother stepped in and protested! My father was a large animal vet.
