This year vs last year…….I’ll post a comparison to the last 5 years at the end……What you really want to look at though is each individual county's trend line to see how it fits in with that

I'll say this about gamecheck compliance. Folks that skin/process their own deer probably don't have to worry about gamecheck because there's no accountability in that process. However, when you take your deer to a processor, gamecheck in my area is essential now. I'm sure every year, there's a significant number of hunters who start using gamecheck because they start using a processor for the first time. However, how that stacks up against those who stop using a processor, don't harvest an animal, pass away, etc. is anyone's guess. I say all this to again clarify something that's simply a fact in this overall discussion - except for numbers on a board, absolutes in this is tough to come by.

Dang CNC, thanks for proving my point. Second weekend of the year 2025 vs 2026.

So in summary, in the 24 hrs ending at 7 am on the second Saturday and Sunday in Jan 2025, you had a grand total of around half and inch of rain throughout most of the state. Between 7am Friday and 7am Saturday you had 1/2 in on average, with no rain at all anywhere in the state on Saturday after 7 am.

For the 24 hrs ending at 7 AM on the second Saturday and Sunday in Jan 2026, you had a grand total of around 3.5-4.0" of rain on average throughout most all of the state between 7 am Friday and 7 am Saturday, followed by between half an inch and one inch throughout most of the state for the period from 7 am Saturday and 7 am Sunday.

When you click on Saturday in that link, it is showing the 24 hr rainfall for the period ending at 7 am on Saturday, not how much rain occurred on Saturday. You've got to actually read the description of what you are looking at. Total of 1/2'' of rain in a 48 hr period (2025) is nothing. 4" of rain in a 48 hour period (2026) is a freaking flood and specific areas, in the central part of the state, got over 6" . Gotta understand the data your looking at and how to interpret it, in order to use it effectively. In this case, the data you provided, proved my point perfectly. Stormed all afternoon Friday and all night Friday into early Saturday morning, and then rained most of the day Saturday. Anyone looking at the forecast that was traveling to their camp to hunt, just said man, it's probably going to rain most of the day and the only really good hunt we will get in will be Sunday morning so it's just not worth it, in 2026. In 2025, that Saturday forecast would show 0% chance of rain and everyone said heck yeah, ruts on, let's drive up Friday night and kill them Saturday and Sunday. I'll bet you that there were 70-80% less hunters in the woods this past Friday and Saturday, than there were in 2025. I'm betting the harvest data shows exactly that too.

I didn't go last weekend for that very reason. And I'd bet I'm not alone.

Well, let's hear your prediction for 26/27 season.

It’ll depend on which county we’re talking about…..Some will likely kill more but it’ll still need to be looked at in the context of how it relates to the long term trend line……Even increasing and declining lines typically have an up/down…up/down….pattern as they increase or decline…..Let's see how the rest of this season plays out

Like I’ve said before, warmer days are normal. Timing of those warmer days does matter though. People struggled early in the season because of acorns and warm weather on the weekends ppl normally hunt. Doe harvest started out behind. Ppl normally base doe harvest on what they see. They see less, then they shoot less. They will however, kill a buck, just because it’s a buck and not a doe.

The rut rolls around, and people certainly aren’t going to kill a doe with bucks running all the country with their tongues out, but because they’ve seen fewer deer, they’re less selective on bucks, so a lot of those numbers are not considerably less than most years. Doe harvest continues to do down, while buck harvest slightly inches upward. There’s been a lot of bucks killed up here in the last two weeks, and ppl still aren’t killing does, out of choice, not because they’ve disappeared.

The need and or desire to kill horns is overwhelmingly the hardest part of managing. I honestly think it’s innate as a hunter to seek horns aka antlers. Even cavan drawings were of huge antlers/horned critters. 😆

I know folks consider hunter sightings as relevant and it is to some degree.

I wished I had a dollar for every time I’ve had a hunter or a group of hunters mention they’re not seeing does. Then someone hunting that same area say they’re haven’t seen a buck anywhere but seeing a ton of does Everton they hunt. 🤷‍♂️

The need or desire to kill horns has never been an issue for me. As far as passing on 3 year olds. Those does are a lot lighter to drag.

We are running right on schedule. This is the way it is on our place when we get the perfect weather. Should get real interesting in the next week.

I believe it. Every greenfield I have filled up with deer this afternoon, including some bucks that haven't daylighted in 3 months. Of course, I was at home cooking gumbo wink
