Have a good friend born & raised in southern Lowndes Co... He has a shop slap full of 130"-150"+ bucks , most dating from back in the 70s/80s era when his surrounding area was in soy beans / Ag. Since the Ag stopped & the pine tree industry took over, now a 120" buck is few & far between for him & his area. Amazing how much hunting can change over time

I grew up in the heart of the MS Delta and the hunting sucked because everyone shot every buck they saw. Sure, it was great on the big river clubs, but the heart of ag land was shot out. It didn’t start improving until marginal land was put back into habitat and people slowly started to see what could happen if you let deer get some age on them. And let’s not kid ourselves, the rednecks got priced out. It will blow your mind to see what gets killed on a regular basis now. Heck, my 73 yr old mother killed a 150” 8pt on her 80 acres a couple weeks ago. That’s her 2nd buck to break 150” off of 80 acres in the last few years. Alabama has a lot of potential, but the hunting culture sucks for quality.

SE Kansas.
I aged him at three years old. The outfitter said he may be four years old. Outfitters (and I’ve known and leased to more than a few) may be the least credible source of deer management that exists.

Not all of Kansas has huge deer. That Pic was from a couple years ago. Outfitter said body weight and antlers were way down due to a 2 year drought. Was there with a large group from Alabama and the biggest mature deer shot was a nice 9 pt, but I doubt he would break 135" i shot a 4 year old 10 pt that was barely 200 lbs and probably wouldn't score 115.

I’ve always hunted north central Kansas and those are some big boys up there. I've seen 1 yo deer up there bigger than that picture. But the deer i saw in SE Kansas a couple of years ago weren't any bigger than you would see in Alabama. The day I took that picture I was covered up in deer, probably saw 8 different bucks. I had an 8 that had a bigger rack than that one at maybe 20 yards. He had tine length but zero mass. His main beams were about as thick as my finger. Probably 1, maybe 2 years old. Did see one nice mature buck that day, very wide, but not a huge deer by any means. I doubt he would score 130. Never could get a shot on him.

Brock made a great comment that before baiting and cell cameras, “good potential” young deer and “poor potential” young deer were killed at the same rate. Now a higher percentage of “good potential” young deer are targeted, which basically high grades your herd over time. It has a negative cumulative effect. He can clarify if I misstated. That’s 100% correct. I see it all the time. The very best (highest scoring) middle aged deer are selected to kill and the lower end of the bell curve is selected to walk. That puts the lower scoring deer in the upper age classes, while the higher scoring deer are being removed between 2-4 years of age across the board. I see very large acreages losing near 100% of 2-3 year olds on the upper end of the bell curve every single year. They don’t lack mature deer. But they certainly lack the better mature deer. That ALL changed with legalized baiting on small properties and cameras. Selective harvest over random harvest. Another repercussion from corn and cameras . Who'da thunk it? What were the other repercussions?? Death of woodmanship.

I have not deer hunted this year.
Went and looked around today and checked some cameras.
The numbers are going to change a little next weekend.

Looks like a baby but need more and closer pics That buck walked within 5 yards of me a couple minutes later. I was sitting in a chair fully exposed and he never gave me a second glance, but I wasn't gonna hold up my phone and say "cheese" Kansas deer are dumb compared to Alabama deer. You would be shocked with what I got away with in full view of deer the morning I shot a deer on that trip.
