Tags based off acreage would wreck deer hunting in Alabama. Rich people buy more land poor people don’t get to hunt. Works really well for the deep pockets. In Alabama you’ll create a bunch of outlaws with that. Sometimes people and managment goals become super selfish. Folks that get to hunt all week every week on better than average property can get really critical of the weekend warrior that’s just doing the best he can.
T, I probably am getting a little critical. But it’s not of the weekend warrior, it’s of the 40 acre landowner who between himself, friends and family are taking multiple limits and destroying his neighbors ability to achieve even modest management goals.
I wish I had 40 acres that we could kill that many deer on. Heck on our 1000+ acres after about a week of a few people hunting the deer sightings drop way off after opening week. No way we could kill that many deer on our property much less 40 acres. However it’s real easy to stop them. Buy them out or buy everything around them and put up a fence if you want to “own” all the deer.
Marsh, it only works if the 40 acres adjoins, juts up into, or sits in the middle of a couple thousand acres of heavily managed property. It absolutely can be done. Plant a 1 acre food plot with the right stuff, have bait on the edge of it 24/7, put a cell cam on it and stay out of it. Only hunt it only once a week or once every other week, when conditions and the wind are right, and you can hammer bucks and be very successful on just 40 acres. The key is it needs to be in the right location, and more importantly, adjacent to the right neighbors, to grow, hold and produce your deer for you.
