Now Matt, people have already posted about this. You know you can only do that because you’ve got the best property in the state. 10s of thousands of private acres. Nobody else has property to hunt that’s anywhere close to as good as yours, and that’s why you see deer all the time and have big bucks to shoot every year. Your success is only due to your environment.

T hatchie. I think you’re a sharp dude and agree with most of what you post. I do see your argument and perspective. But deer hunting is quickly becoming a rich man’s game. Any further restriction only hurts the average blue collar guy. There’s an old saying “ you’ll never be able to legislate people into morality.” Same could be said for game rules.

That would be fantastic, but it’s not reality. 😂

A utopia of endless flowing rivers of giant deer. I like the sound of that. It’s really too bad that you’re the only one in the state that gets to enjoy that. lol. If this warm weather sticks with us, and you still want to get one, we’re going to need to make that trip we were talking about in mid-late Feb

Tags based off acreage would wreck deer hunting in Alabama. Rich people buy more land poor people don’t get to hunt. Works really well for the deep pockets. In Alabama you’ll create a bunch of outlaws with that. Sometimes people and managment goals become super selfish. Folks that get to hunt all week every week on better than average property can get really critical of the weekend warrior that’s just doing the best he can. T, I probably am getting a little critical. But it’s not of the weekend warrior, it’s of the 40 acre landowner who between himself, friends and family are taking multiple limits and destroying his neighbors ability to achieve even modest management goals. I wish I had 40 acres that we could kill that many deer on. Heck on our 1000+ acres after about a week of a few people hunting the deer sightings drop way off after opening week. No way we could kill that many deer on our property much less 40 acres. However it’s real easy to stop them. Buy them out or buy everything around them and put up a fence if you want to “own” all the deer.

Marsh, it only works if the 40 acres adjoins, juts up into, or sits in the middle of a couple thousand acres of heavily managed property. It absolutely can be done. Plant a 1 acre food plot with the right stuff, have bait on the edge of it 24/7, put a cell cam on it and stay out of it. Only hunt it only once a week or once every other week, when conditions and the wind are right, and you can hammer bucks and be very successful on just 40 acres. The key is it needs to be in the right location, and more importantly, adjacent to the right neighbors, to grow, hold and produce your deer for you.

But, with respect, I don’t think you realize what can be killed on the right small tract next to intensely managed large tracts with feeders and an almost four month season. I’m only offering thoughts that Alabama needs to address with continued land fragmentation.

I do agree in the right circumstances and under the right conditions it could happen. I’m talking about the issue of all the small 5ac or less landowners that are supposedly killing all these deer constantly from the same corn pile. We’re on 2 different topics. However my 40acs are right in the middle of a13kac farm that is full of deer. The deer on that farm are only bow hunted. I feed heavy to try to pull deer to my property. We get a few but I can promise you that we don’t pull enough deer to kill 1 limit much less multiple. Also our experience is once deer are shot at a corn pile they tend to avoid them during daylight hours. And we try to do everything right. I guess deer are different in other areas.

But if the deer on managed property had everything the deer need or want, why would they leave the property to go to better plots or feeders on a small property that has constant pressure? I know deer do what deer do and it’s hard to explain. We just have no spot on our place where you can constantly kill deer throughout the season. We may kill 2-3 over a weeks time but you better leave that area alone for a while if you want to kill something there again.

Sounds like the guy is a heck of a bow hunter but sucks at bow shooting. I’d congratulate him for the bow kills if he was my neighbor.

So are public schools (aka taxpayer-funded daycare) Fire Dept Police Dept
But no one is willing to give those up. I'll take all the public land I can get. like I did that Covid money. Only time in my life I got squat for all I pay in taxes.

If you're the large landowner , it should be easy to supply better daytime bedding cover , food and lower pressure to "hold" those deer on your property. I never had much problem out of smaller acreage neighbors, as I have superior daytime cover, low pressure and low impact hunting. Constantly worrying about what the neighbors are doing will make ya
"Why do you ask"?

I understand the big landowner side but this ain’t Idaho and never will be. U gotta get away from people for what u want to work. I only own 12 but am very responsible about what I shoot off of it and only taken 2 last 6yrs have a couple around me that own right at 500. They actually have shot deer I let go that were 120 inch 3yr old bucks and would have been awesome looking with another year or two so it’s not just the 10-20 acre person is my point but it’s a situation no law will ever change in these parts of the country. In the south if u don’t have a fence then don’t get disappointed when Joe blow shoots ur deer or several cause it’s gonna happen and ain’t nothing u can do or say.
