I'm getting 2900 out of my AR10 16" 308 with a 130 TTSX and been to 1000 with it no need for anything else really...

Not enough gain vs 308 to make 338 worth the hassle to me. 358 is another story. Then again, I’d love to see a ‘408’ go commercial. wink

However no one offers rifles made for this cartridge anymore. I am thinking of a barrel swap in my old Savage 308.

35caliber.com, buy .243 and have it rebored to .338.

Couldn’t I just have the 308 barrel rebored?

Yes. Big Bore sent his to JES Reboring IIRC.

Yeah, but then you'd still have a Savage.

A stout bullet like just about anything bonded, or even a 165 gameking (in 308) may not have the velocity and energy to expand well at the longer distances you mentioned. Just be mindful of that. You may want to play with the expected velocity numbers and choice bullet parameters in a ballistics program to get 300+ yard velocity estimates and cross reference them to minimum velocities needed for adequate expansion
It’s been a while since I tested velocities in my 16” AR10 308. If I remember correctly the 165gr fusions were leaving the muzzle at just under 2600fps. The 130gr TTSXs were upper 2800s. I’d have to look back at my note. I went with the 165gr fusions because I may have a lifetime supply and no issues with performance on deer. And the shoot great in that platform.

165 grain Fusions out of mine with a 16 in faxon match barrel were 2510fps according to the gunsmith at Marks. Just an FYI.

I have a 20 inch Ruger AG2 in 30-06, and would not want a suppressor on it if shooting out of a shooting house. It has a 19 or 20 in barrel.
