That Scout in .35 Whelen is like a woman. Soft to the touch and hard to handle when triggered!! I love mine but it’s the only rifle I ever shot that I felt the recoil when shooting at a deer. It’s pretty stout. But are you shooting it suppressed? No Sir!! Does a suppressor tame the recoil? Only shot 1 rifle with a suppressor so I’m not familiar with them at all. It sure seems like it to me Interesting!!

Suppressors act like muzzle brakes somewhat. They're also a sginificant weight on the end of the barrel, limiting muzzle rise and overall recoil by adding mass and inertia. A suppressor plus a heavy low light scope makes 308-class deer rifles tame down considerably. My 25 WSSM is like shooting a 22lr. I suppose any 120gr 6.5CM or 7mm08 would be similar, but I haven't tried it. I do intend to try it with .308 130gr.

Several hogs and deer here at home. Same results. If they ran it wasn’t far and blood everywhere. Most dropped right there.

Somewhere close to 3700-3800 fps, they'd probably come apart though.

Someone needs to talk me out if getting a 7mm Backcountry for this exact purpose What are you planning to hunt with it? Shot distance? At this current time, my plans are to maybe go to 400. I'm hoping one day I will be able to go out of state for an Elk or Mule deer. Someone needs to talk me out if getting a 7mm Backcountry for this exact purpose That will be my next deer rifle. Deciding now whether to do 16", 18", or 20". Leaning toward the Weatherby 307 Alpine with a 16" barrel, just not 100% yet. I'm really looking at the 16". I want to have a barrel length of 24" or less with suppressor on. Someone needs to talk me out if getting a 7mm Backcountry for this exact purpose That will be my next deer rifle. Deciding now whether to do 16", 18", or 20". Leaning toward the Weatherby 307 Alpine with a 16" barrel, just not 100% yet. If velocity is an important factor in your definition of "best" then this is really the answer, if not then think 338 Federal or 358 winchester would be top candidates. My reasoning is that I want the same performance out to 450-500 yards that I currently get from my 26" 280 Ackley. The Backcountry does that plus some with a 20" barrel, and the 7mm Backcountry is much better with heavier bullets. Same for me. Basically the ability to shoot the same velocity as a 280AI with a 24" barrel and a 175gr bullet of 2900 with a 16" barrel.

N2TRKYS - I never disagreed with you that the 7mm-08 is a fine caliber. It is one of about 20 different calibers that my wife and I have killed critters with, and I actually recommended it on the first page of this thread. I have bought several 7mm-08 rifles as gifts for young folks as their first deer rifle, and the first whitetail I shot this year died from a 120 grain Barnes TTSX out of my integrally suppressed 7mm-08. 7mm-08 is also the caliber that I recommend for any new hunter who might only buy one rifle.
It is not, however, the equal of the 280 Ackley, the 7mm Backcountry, the 7mm Rem Mag, the 7mm RUM, or even the 7mm PRC.
My attraction to the 7mm Backcountry is that it will do everything that a 280 Ackley or 7mm Rem Mag will do, but it will do it with a 16" barrel. Therefore, I will be buying one soon. If I am pleased with it, it will stay here until I am gone. If not, I'll sell it and all the ammo that I have for it, as I have done with other rifles/calibers in the past. It will likely never be fired without a suppressor, unless I decide to do so as a recoil comparison.
I'm not exactly sure why this offends you, or caused you to argue with me or others regarding our statements about this new cartridge.

I just said that it and many other cartridges would kill deer and elk at the ranges listed with way less powder and recoil. You didn’t offend me and wasn’t sure what you were trying to argue with me about. People say the word elk and immediately think that it requires some magnum cartridge to kill them and it don’t. Get what you want because it’s what you want, not because it’s what you think it takes to kill an elk. Lol

I honestly dont care about shooting a heavy for caliber bullet. I'm perfectly fine with continuing to shoot a 140gr TSX like I do in my 708. Just like the velocities of these bullets in the very short barrels. Which that said what would the velocities of say a 130gr TTSX in a 16" barreled 308?

While the 308 is the easy button, any of the others from 6.5 to 358 on the short actions are plenty capable in 16-18” barrels. However, the larger the bore, the more efficient a given case size is for shorter barrels. So, the 358 is Taylor made for this scenario. I have a 308 BLR takedown cut to 16.5 and threaded, that’s just about ideal for any eastern hunting uses. The only way it might be ‘more’ would be to make it a 358. Not sure it’s really ‘better’, though. I probably wouldn’t lose sleep if it was a 6.5cm or a 7-08, either. I have no doubts about any of them.

Looking hard now at the Bergara B-14 Ridge in .308 with the 18" barrel (B14S511C). Bergara even sells a can of their own now, the BTI30. https://www.bergara.online/us/suppressors/bti30/I have looked at many cans. More confused now than when I started, because there are so many out there. I know I want lightweight (titanium), short, as much noise reduction as is possible, durable, and I plan on leaving it on the one rifle all the time. What would you guys suggest I look at?

I like my Banish 30. Can run it short or long. There's a bunch of good 30 cal cans out there. I won a raffle for a Silencer Central Banish 22 and ended up with getting both. I've really like it so far. I've had it one 223 22-250, 7mm Rem Mag, and 28 Nosler. Suppressed magnums are a lot of fun.

If you intend to never use the suppressor for another gun, you can look at integrally suppressed rifles. Liberty Suppressors does one for about the cost of a titanium suppressor alone.

I think if I had to do a medium range short barreled rifle, I’d like to have the .338 Federal running the 180gr Accubonds at around 2600-2700fps our of a 20”barrel. I think that would be a thumper. However no one offers rifles made for this cartridge anymore. I am thinking of a barrel swap in my old Savage 308.

I agree marsh. The 338 Federal has always intrigued me. I've been tempted to build a Model Seven in 338 but I've got a 308 Seven LSS with a custom 21" and it's just too perfect of a rifle and just a slight caliber difference. But a 338 Federal just like it would be awesome, just $$$$
