I’ve been wanting a Howa mini action in either a 6.5 Grendel or 6 ARC. I’m going to purchase a 6 ARC in a bold action. My issue is Howa doesn’t make the Mini in a left handed model. The best option I’ve found so far is the new Savage Axis 2 Pro. I’m going to keep researching. I have time before I’m ready to buy.

Shorter bbls in 308 or whatever... Will need to pay attention to down range velocity and the bullet construction. If you get down to 16 or 18" bbl, MV is going to suffer a decent amount. Reduced MV means reduced velocity down range. A stout bullet like just about anything bonded, or even a 165 gameking (in 308) may not have the velocity and energy to expand well at the longer distances you mentioned. Just be mindful of that. You may want to play with the expected velocity numbers and choice bullet parameters in a ballistics program to get 300+ yard velocity estimates and cross reference them to minimum velocities needed for adequate expansion It’s been a while since I tested velocities in my 16” AR10 308. If I remember correctly the 165gr fusions were leaving the muzzle at just under 2600fps. The 130gr TTSXs were upper 2800s. I’d have to look back at my note. I went with the 165gr fusions because I may have a lifetime supply and no issues with performance on deer. And the shoot great in that platform.

I would just recommend don’t cheap out on a suppressor rig. I did on my first rimfire host and regretted it until I upgraded.
I’ve had great luck from my 12” 6.5 Grendel the past few years on hunts. I’ll have to double check but I believe I was getting 2250-2300 FPS with factory 123 SST’s.

A 20” barrel is not a short barreled rifle for NFA purposes. A .308 in a 16” to 20” barrel is handy for the ranges you mention and subsonic is available for suppressor use if short range very quiet is also something you are interested in. 16” and longer does not require the stamp, free or not. I think you would be fine with a .308. Let Grok or ChatGpt how short you want to go, they'll do the math for you almost as fast as a democrat sticking his hand out for cash he didn't work to earn.

I'd go 308 with a 16.5" barrel. Remington sps tac be a good un, but rare as hens teeth. Buddy in town had a new one last year that was missing some finish, i wasn't about to pay for a brand new gun that already looked used lol, but lot's of companies are pumping crap out like that now unfortunately. Just take whatever ya buy and have it cut down & threaded, that's what I'd do

Not inexpensive, but a Browning Micro X Bolt in 6.5 or 308 would be my choice.
I also like the bolt action AR upper I have from Bear Creek. If you did this, and didn’t like your original caliber choice, you can always swap out to a different one relatively cheap.

.308, but you could make an argument for 7mm08 or. 338 Federal This is an extremely intelligent statement!!! .308 is fullproof. 7-08 is interchangeable with that statement. For something different take a look at the .338federal. I am a huge fan of that round and at one time hunted with it almost exclusively.

Get you a Ruger American 308 Compact model. Budget friendly and accurate. As already said, you will have a plethora of cartridge options including subsonic if you like. Also the cartridges are budget friendly when compared to a lot of other options.

My reasoning is that I want the same performance out to 450-500 yards that I currently get from my 26" 280 Ackley. The Backcountry does that plus some with a 20" barrel, and the 7mm Backcountry is much better with heavier bullets.
