This is the kind of weather week that will skew harvest numbers for the year. An entire week around the largest holiday we have - crazy heat, low deer movement, thousands of folks off work are either not hunting or having little success - no way statistics can catch up to what should have been. Or… now hear me out… or, all the deer are already dead. 😂 Y’all. It’s getting out of hand. I’ve had a dozen conversation with ppl locally, multiple conversations on social media, and am seeing it posted on group boards nearly every day. At what point did hunters become so out of touch with the animals they pursue? I guess I must live in a bubble. Apparently hunters are no longer students and learners. They just bait and take. I don’t get it. It was pretty common knowledge when I was even a young hunter that good spring growing conditions, high acorn production and warm weather meant getting in the grind and working extra hard to kill deer. It’s simply a tough game you gotta figure out. People are acting like there’s been a mass die off and they believe it to their core. It might take a minute for folks to remember how they hunted before baiting was allowed. I’ll be the first to admit it. I’m lazy. I just don’t hate deer that much anymore. I like cooking at the camp and hanging around the fire and watching ball games on the porch too much to get after them the way I used to. I like trying to grow them more than killing them.

I’ve been counting coup on them more and more the last few years. A successful hunt, for myself, is one where I have the option to take one regardless of whether I put the meat on the ground. Of course some of this is due to the situation with the public land I hunt. When it was a private lease, there are places I could go kill a deer in the evening and have it hanging in the skinning shed in 45 minutes. I can still get to those places but it’s all on foot, uphill all the way out on unmaintained trails and a kill is going to be a 3-4 hour ordeal. I’m just not that hungry nor am I in that shape anymore. But my local camp population is as robust, and visible, as ever.

Everyone is selling something. It’s like a nascar event. I’ve been reading comments on FB and I just shake my head. People don’t want the truth, they want you to agree with their truth which is a fallacy. We no longer hunt compared to how we hunted 20-30, 50 years ago. It was much more social and now it’s more individualized. Everyone bought the easy button It’s not just deer hunting but all hunting has become at some point. The one thing that remains the same, back when I ran the club everyone had a completely different experience. Trying to stick to QDMA standards and people being people never could wholeheartedly agree on anything. Westervelt stated in a meeting, once you exceed 10 members trouble starts creeping in exponentially. Social media is a hunting club so to speak. Sad to say but when there were no standards everyone seems much happier. this. I know Westerville doesn’t allow corn on their leases. Wonder if anyone has compared their deer numbers etc etc if they have fallen off or remained same?

There’s a lot of folks out there who have legitimate complaints but because its not happening on the property the biologist hunts it cant be happening anywhere else and everyone else are just fools. What will be interesting is to hear the excuses people come up with next year when we don’t have the rebound they are predicting with deer behind every tree

I’ve been hunting Alabama long enough to know that an extended period of warm weather in late December means I stay home. So that’s what I did this weekend and went out to the marsh to duck hunt. I probably saw as many ducks as deer. NONE!!

He’s posted on many posts that there are areas with problems but he nor I believe the whole state of Alabama had a massive kill off by hunters and now has a population issue. I talked to my buddies that are at the camp right now. Since Thursday they have only seen 4 deer. Does that mean they were all killed off? Nope that means is hot and late December. The deer are doing what they always do do this time of year. In a couple weeks with the right weather it will be on fire again. Just like is every year. Also the lack of movement means less deer killed which means more carry over to next year which means more bucks and does to make more baby bucks and does.

This weekend is actually going to end up being just about like every other weekend we've had so far......Most counties are gonna fall another couple percentage points just like they did last week......I'll post the new numbers Tues

Sad to say but when there were no standards everyone seems much happier. Woodsmanship is dead. I could go kill one anytime I want to.

Woodsmanship is dead. I could go kill one anytime I want to. Me too . but I know the woods better than anyone on here because I spend every day in the woods . Deer are creatures of habit . Just think you live in ur house half ur life . Half work half sleeping . U know when a spoon is left on the counter . The deer spend 24 hr 365 days a year in their house and when we Intrude they know it . If a deer lives over 3 years he knows his home better than we will ever know ours . Have to have that mentality every time you step in the woods hunting deer . Be sneaky and leave no trace . Weather does change things and next week should’ve really good time to hunt .

Deer are showing up en masse well after dark. Not in the corn fields. Bear in mind 55 or so does died two summers ago. 11 died this summer and I’m still getting pics of deeerssssss lol If not for the habitat around the farm we wouldn’t have this problem. A few more years and their numbers should dwindle down anyways. Bucks are moving more so than does and best it appears 1/1 or so 👍🏼 Of course game cams don’t tell the story in its entirety

Here's a unseasonably warm spin-off. Many folks that are having trouble seeing deer during this heat wave will say " they didn't rut this year".

I saw 1 knot head, two grown does and a fawn with them this AM all crossing a woods road. No bucks behind them unfortunately. Zero pics on my feeders. Zero coon pics last night. I just want to know what killed all the coons too….and hogs.

I flat do not like hunting in hot weather - i did the other day and saw squat. Even my cams in the hardwoods are slow - trapping is slow - its hot. I hunt in rut when its hot and opening week. I may go today but doubt it. I despise sweating when i hunt - i just do! Large part of my land is a thicket a rabbit will hav trouble getting into (unhuntable - 5 yard range max) and most of the rest is thick planted pines. One of my best hardwood sections is a steep ridge down into maybe a 2 acre bottom and i would need a helicoptor to get him out of that steep 350 yardish decent. I hav walked it a bunch in pitch black several times to get to a gob and it is rough just walking out of there - no way i get a deer up it - i fall walking it - my neighbor has tons of pretty hardwoods across the creek I do hav some travel corridors i can hunt but i prefer to do that with a climber and my health does not allow at this time. The older i get i got to hav common safety sense - not 45 any more. I hunt the land the best is set up for. I hunt roads and fields and maybe in few weeks travel corridors. I do hav one other small hardwood option but would rather be n a climber if i did. And i would rather get my tail whipped til i could hardly walk as to spook a bunch of deer getting out of there. In my hunting history on the deer i hunt - 1 spook is usually all i get on a mature unless get lucky n rut and that never seems to happen
I cant call any of what i done this year hunting cause i barley been. Go to dr Tuesday and that prob best day this week - will try it tomorrow in Gail force and will enjoy the heck out of it since it cold
Never been lazy and try to hunt my properties the best for how they are set up

I know it’s always warm in Alabama, but this year does seem to be well above average in my area. Not just warm, very muggy with dense fog. My deer have definitely laid off the green fields in the last few weeks and they are getting a chance to rebound.
Hogs aren’t moving much on my place either.
