It was 70 degrees here in Missouri today, 65 here right now. Monday morning is going to 14 degrees, wind WNW 24 mph - 3 degree windchill. So hopefully some colder wather is headed your way next week.

This is the kind of weather week that will skew harvest numbers for the year. An entire week around the largest holiday we have - crazy heat, low deer movement, thousands of folks off work are either not hunting or having little success - no way statistics can catch up to what should have been.

Or… now hear me out… or, all the deer are already dead.

😂

Y’all. It’s getting out of hand. I’ve had a dozen conversation with ppl locally, multiple conversations on social media, and am seeing it posted on group boards nearly every day. At what point did hunters become so out of touch with the animals they pursue? I guess I must live in a bubble. Apparently hunters are no longer students and learners. They just bait and take. I don’t get it. It was pretty common knowledge when I was even a young hunter that good spring growing conditions, high acorn production and warm weather meant getting in the grind and working extra hard to kill deer. It’s simply a tough game you gotta figure out. People are acting like there’s been a mass die off and they believe it to their core.

Yep. The damage is done now. It’s been unusually warm during the peak killing weekends and holidays. Harvests won’t catch up now.

TRUTH ^^^ ! When this weather breaks Monday AM , which will coincide with peak breeding , there should be a REAL die off up in Ol' Hi-Jackson.

I've seen this movie several times. We've had long , unseasonable warm , foggy spells several times . Once in the mid 90's we had one that hit and lasted a full two weeks Christmas and New Year week. It was just like it is now, no body was seeing any much less killing any and it was prime killing time. New Years day was in the middle of the week ( like this year) and many folks had to go back to work on Monday . A big front moved in on Saturday and dumped snow, but it didn't get super cold . Saturday and Sunday sounded like a dove shoot in my area. There were more nice bucks killed on those two days than all the previous days of season combined.

BTW, it works the same way when a single digit , artic spell sets in. If it's super , single digit cold , for extended period , they can shut down , a little warm up will flip the switch. The first AM it's sunny and temps hit in upper 30's mid morning is magic. This scenario happened 2 years ago. We had snow on the ground with single digits for several days , the first day it was sunny and got above freezing about 9-10 am it was a blood bath.

Deer don't hop a plane during extreme weather periods , then fly home when weather is normal . Our season is verrrrrrrrry looooooong, weather will change .

Just look back at the progression of hunting as an industry. Everyone is selling something. It’s like a nascar event. I’ve been reading comments on FB and I just shake my head. People don’t want the truth, they want you to agree with their truth which is a fallacy.

We no longer hunt compared to how we hunted 20-30, 50 years ago. It was much more social and now it’s more individualized. Everyone bought the easy button
It’s not just deer hunting but all hunting has become at some point.

The one thing that remains the same, back when I ran the club everyone had a completely different experience. Trying to stick to QDMA standards and people being people never could wholeheartedly agree on anything. Westervelt stated in a meeting, once you exceed 10 members trouble starts creeping in exponentially. Social media is a hunting club so to speak.

Sad to say but when there were no standards everyone seems much happier.

Woodsmanship is dead. I could go kill one anytime I want to.
