I do believe that game check has a much greater chance of being accurate the longer it's used. And I also think you can gain fairly accurate information from year to year, now that it's widely accepted. the reason I commented on the last map you posted was because it went back to the early years of game check when bait was legalized and it was HIGHLY inaccurate, then used that data in comparison to the numbers game check produces NOW, which are more accurate. When doing that, of course it's going to show a massive increase in harvest numbers. Did everybody get busy again ? So here's a little bit of the conversation where we addressed these same questions about 3 pages ago.......This is why I ignore a lot of the stuff being repetitively asked just for gaslighting purposes......I'll probably ignore more of it in the future..... So I went back and looked them up for us…..Here’s the numbers for the last 5 seasons for what the hunter survey estimates versus what was checked in to game check ……The last 4 seasons have been extremely stable for compliance rates…..I’m pretty sure that 71% year was the first year they made you have to take a number to the processor……So according to that I would need to bump my totals down slightly in my spread sheet for 5 seasons ago
The 2024-25 hunter survey estimated killing...... 330,400 The 2024-25 game check has us at……..206,000 62% compliance rate
The 2023-24 hunter survey estimated killing...... 314,500 The 2023-24 game check has us at……..202,300 64% compliance
The 2022-23 hunter survey..... 308,700 The 2022-23 game check…..196,700 63% compliance
The 2021-22 hunter survey...... 301,122 The 2021-22 game check……186,500 62% compliance
The 2020-21 hunter survey ......272, 700 The 2020-21 game check..... 195,200 71% compliance I'm surprised Matt is just gonna completely run from this one though......Any opinion on the increase in doe harvest map Matt?? Increase in doe harvest since 2020......![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/o2dYxHu.jpeg)

Come to think of it, dont worry about it Matt……I’d rather you just pretend to not see it than to simply come up with something to keep from having to agree with me.

You really didn't address the specifics of my post. Like, any. Your dates post date game check and corn permits by a good bit. That's the point that just flew over your head.
Also, concerning these numbers you are posting. What are the parameters that are getting these percentages from ?
Last week to this week ? Last year to this year ? 2021 to this year ?
Because just a couple of weeks ago you were using negative harvest numbers to make the case that the deer were already dead. We all told you for several weeks that it was hot weather, acorns, no rain, etc. And it went in one ear and out the other.
Anyhow... it looks like we rebounded nicely.

We already agree that lots of areas have seen big changes in the buck populations……Many of those are the same counties where overall population levels have also just been lowered as well ^^^^…..We’ve gotten hit with a double whammy in a lot of places……

I’m not ignoring anything CNC. Matt has a job and has been running between job sites and burning all week, getting home late in the evenings. Burning now actually, but I’ll say that map reflects EXACTLY what I said it would when AL decided to legalize baiting and extend seasons statewide. It paved the way for a lot more deer to die on small tracts that previously had a negligible impact on overall deer harvest. I don’t think it’s doom and gloom like you do, but it’s definitely having an impact.

Its pretty gloomy for a lot of areas though……Those big increases took out a lot of deer……The only way were going to recover from a population standpoint in many places is for more clubs and landowners to stop shooting does to make up for the excess that’s getting shot on those small tracts……

Anyhow... it looks like we rebounded nicely. I talked to a large area farmer today who normally sells A LOT of deer corn every season. He said his deer corn sales are way off so far this season.

The larger tracts are always going to be the producers for the small parcels. Legally, they have just as much right and claim to a deer that crosses their 2 acres as the guy with 2000 next door spending $30k annually on habitat improvements. I can see it having a large impact in east AL and the TN valley. Those areas are far more populated with smaller land holdings and an ever-increasing population sprawling into rural landscapes. I don’t think it will lead to a population reduction at all in NW, west, central and SW AL. It is however, impacting age structure across the board. I don’t think anyone can refute that.

Also CNC the difference between the Hunter survey and the game check kill data is in no way the GC compliance rate. That’s the accuracy rate for kills reported on game check versus the “estimated” kills derived from extrapolating data from the Hunter survey. The compliance rate is the total number of hunters participating in game check divided by the total number of people hunting deer. In order to have a compliance rate, you have run a calculation using the total number of hunters killing deer (unknown) versus the total number of hunters hunting deer (this includes both licensed, unlicensed illegal, unlicensed but legal due to age young and old and property ownership, and finally lifetime licensed) total also unknown, versus the total number of individual hunters who actually reported deer on game check, should be known, but it’s not reported anywhere. Number of kills has nothing to do with compliance rate. You see CNC, statistics and data analysis might not be your thing. The only thing your charts prove is that more deer are being reported on game check. Problem is that with all the population, regulation, compliance requirements, season changes, processor compliance, economic, social and environmental changes that have occurred over the past 10 yrs, nobody knows what the real cause for the increase in reported GC kills is, and if there really are more or less kills occurring. I’m relatively certain that there are more but how much more is it really. Garbage in, garbage out. Making predictions and managing wildlife based on bad or incomplete data is a recipe for disaster and AL has mastered doing it into an art form.

Yeah, in my haste I forgot to mention the fact nobody has any idea if the GC numbers are actual compliance rates increasing or increased harvest itself. And we never will know.
I do know this, harvest is WAY down around here due to acorns. 😁

Way down in the SW blackbelt too. Deer are scattered and don’t have to move much to eat right now.
