He also stated more times than I care to count that there are also areas that are still overpopulated. It’s no one’s else’s fault you have poor comprehension skills and rather accuse someone of having an agenda because they have a job to do. I’m not sure what your occupation is but if you work for someone, you kinda have to do want they want. Matt provides a service to people just like you do when you track. But I don’t need to defend Matt to you. You won’t understand any of it anyway.
Thanks, but yeah I don’t need defending. Harold and I agree on more than he realizes. I’m actually at odds with a pretty high percentage of hunters over what I feel like is best for the resource in this state. And that’s fine. Im not mad at anybody over it. I think it’s silly and ignorant to call ppl communist because they want the resource to benefit. Deer need to win at times instead of being on the losing end of our selfish desires. Still can’t wrap my mind around that.I fought against the Feb extension in areas it wasn’t justified (most of north AL). I was not in favor of legalized baiting and I hate cell cams. I say that, and I use them 12 months out of the year for surveys, inventory, and observations. Yet, I would toss them in the trash tonight if I knew they were prohibited starting at 6 am tomorrow morning. Some ppl have a hard time understanding what I have against them. It’s not necessarily the camera itself. It’s the THREE things I just mentioned collectively. Are cameras bad? No. They’re great tools! Is baiting bad? Not necessarily. If done improperly it can be. Is hunting in February bad? No, in areas hunters need the opportunity to hunt their peak of breeding. Those three combined have absolutely RUINED some areas of the state (YES Harold!!). Harold, you want to find something interesting in what I have to say? I have clients who can not grow a single deer to 4 years of age EVER. They don’t exist. Why? Modern technology in hunting and current game regs. That’s why. Large landowners mind you. Baiting on every nearby parcel has created that. That was my fear. Now some argue I’m a proponent of trophy hunting because I feel that way. No I’m not. I’m a proponent of having a balanced deer herd for ALL users to enjoy. It’s becoming harder for people to enjoy hunting when what they’re after don’t exist. Before cameras and corn, people still baited, yes. They sure did. Not openly on the scale as it is now. Also, didn’t have real time observations pinging our cell phones. Deer harvest used to be random. Now it’s HIGHLY selective. Kill the best, leave the rest. It leads to high grading, poor age structure and a terrible imbalance in sex ratios. So Harold, we do agree that is a problem in areas, and specifically, east AL. It is not widespread over other areas of the state however. It’s localized.

Cell cams are great for keeping the pressure down from people checking their cams all the time. I’m not for outlawing them but I could get behind limiting the real time uploads. Maybe a 24 hour or so delay before getting pics.

I could for sure get behind a ban on baiting. Especially with CWD knocking on our door.

..........you seem to have a mighty hard time admitting there are areas of the state that have a good population for the carrying capacity or even some with too many deer.

It’s become obvious, due to his abnormal lack of posts in the tracking thread (which I enjoy following) that he’s not getting squat for tracking calls this year so he’s managed to convince himself that the only reason that could be happening is because all the deer statewide are close to the point of extinction. It couldn’t possibly be that everyone has tracking dogs now and the normal number of calls are now getting divided up among a much larger number of trackers. Nothing but self serving comments back and forth with himself, gaslighting, and bias confirmation that gets worse each week. Ignoring salient facts about the bad data he’s using to support his theory, ignoring dozens of people throughout the state telling him what they are personally seeing that contradicts his beliefs, because it goes against his personal bias. I’m honestly getting concerned that he’s become so obsessed with his theory that it’s affecting him mentally. Alfa, deep farm, out of state hunters, too many in state hunters, too many people buying land, real estate agents pushing agendas, roads blocking deer travel, coyotes, property fragmentation, urban sprawl, and the best of all….everyone on here that is saying that they don’t have deer number issues, have all gotten together in a grand conspiracy to undermine his theory. Love you CNC but these latest shots at Matt and others have gone a bit too far. Slow your roll just a bit. Game animals and game numbers go through cycles. Always have, always will, it’s nature. Some years are great, some are bad. This bountiful food year and current slow year harvest wise, will lead to the state carrying a bunch more deer into next year and 2-3 years from now, we will be seeing big harvest numbers. The state definitely does a ton of stupid stuff with regard to deer management and they could 100% do a much better job to enhance and promote quality hunting that enables individuals to be able to attain their personal management and harvest goals, but the state of Alabama is in no way about to run out of deer. Never forget that deer are an incredibly adaptive and resilient species.

That’s what I was trying to say. I just can’t say it so elegantly. I was raised where we don’t sugar coat things. I guess I should try to work on that. Probably won’t help because I haven’t changed in all these years. But I’ll try.

Abolt, what is concerning is the “bad data” CNC is using is also the data the State is using to make their decisions. I will note that I am not in favor of an actual mandatory tagging system and hopefully Alabama never goes to one.

Boathand, honest question…what reasons cause you to be opposed to a legitimate tagging system like many other states use successfully?

We’ve been having tags in Louisiana for a long time. Very simple process. Kill the deer, apply the tag on the deer before you move it, check it in in the allotted time and save the confirmation number. Basically the same as the Alabama game check other than the little tag on the deer for transportation from field to wherever its final destination is. And I have never ever been checked by a game warden since the tags became a thing. We did the same thing in Missouri and in Texas. Never had an issue as long as everyone used their own tags. That’s a story for another time. Let’s just say those guys found out the the Missouri Dept of Conservation don’t play and they will find you even if you’re in another state 800 miles away.

I don’t like the government though of it. Even though I am not for them, weren’t we required to use dmap tags when that was a big thing to shoot them outside of doe days? At that point I don’t remember the complaining about them.

We want enforceable laws when it comes to immigration, or theft at Walmart causing our grocery prices to rise, or drunk drivers on the same highway as our family, or our neighbor crossing the line to cut our timber, and dozens more things. But we don’t want enforceable laws when it comes to the management of a public resource that belongs to all of us?

It’s been a while, but yes, I believe we had tags for the does.

This is correct, used for spikes taken as well. Tags were no problem when it meant killing MORE deer.

Don't try to slide up in here with common sense, we don't allow it. wink

I guess that’s my point. Is it that we don’t want them because of the current culture of govt intrusion or some other reason? I distinctly remember filling out orange tags on a pile of deer. We were extremely overpopulated. That is when we would see 20-30 a sit and piled them up the next five years or so. We had to fill them out and had to record everything for the biologist include pulling every jawbone. It wasn’t an option if you wanted to keep killing them.

Now I am showing my age so I will back out slowly.
