Caliber and bullet performance but the main thing is shot placement in the shoulder. Most shots I tried to take out the far shoulder seemed to work well. The 7mm STW 140gr BT they’d pile up right there along with the 300wsm 150gr accubond. The 257 Weatherby 115 BT they run a few yards but that was it.
Put a deeper penetrating bullets like scirocco or partition and they’d run a good piece. Hunting cutover I didn’t want them going off into the bottom. Didn’t take long to learn which bullet to use
The biggest biggy, practice, practice and more practice. I used to shoot across ridges at the club during the summer. Used shooting sticks and so forth like I used while hunting.
I’m wanting to kill one with my AR so I’m working up a 5.56 load with a Barnes tsx 62 or 70 gr. I know it’ll run a ways so I’ll have to chose where I hunt.

I can't see anymore. Used to could blood trail a gut shot deer with a candle. Not so much nowadays. I'm a blind old fart. And I'm terrible at tracking. Thats why I like to drop em where they stand. If they dont drop where they stand they're dead within 20-50 yards. Did back slap one three years ago though he was still alive the next day when we brought in a dog. Other than that I haven't blood trailed a deer in 10+ years. What’s the secret to not having to track them? I would like for them to run about 10 yards and then pile up. I hate getting blood in my corn pile. But what I hate worse is tracking them. Use a bigger gun.

Back on track, many claimed that those wanting the 3 buck limit wanted bigger bucks and was the only reason. I always stated that would be the last part of it. The biggest thing for me was a more balanced deer herd with closer buck to doe ratios. At or below carrying capacity keeps the herd healthier and less impacted by disease. The rut becomes more concentrated and mature bucks a less likely to die from the stresses of the rut. The short term hopefully would translate into bigger bucks but it’d take time.
The biggest thing for me was folks would quit killing all those 1.5 yr olds. I knew guys liking 15-20 of them and giving them all away. Honestly I don’t think dropping to 2 buck limit will accomplish anything that hasn’t already been accomplished. Folks still gonna outlaw if they do. Even with tags there’s work arounds. I knew a guy in arkie that killed 25-30 bucks a year. He’d simply buy license for family members and use their tags. Yeah he bought the license but still those family members would never kill a deer except maybe with their car.

They thought it they kelp others hunters from killing bucks the better thier chances was of seeing a bigger buck would be . They still aint killing shit so they wanna change the rules again so less deer are killed . Course thats just my opinion. Lol

What they want is what the left wants, and they want the government to force you by implementing laws. They have this idea that every hunter should have the same philosophy as them. If you don't, they want it forced upon you.
I have never deer hunted over corn, don't even own a cell camera. I hunt like some others have said, the old way. Somedays I'm lazy if I were honest. I'm getting older so things have changed some, but I don't want to force my way onto you.

You can’t ban cell cams. I’m using them for surveillance more than looking for bucks. Have them watching gates and access trails, which of course end up still seeing deer. How can you regulate or differentiate what someone is using the camera for?

If you don't, they want it forced upon you.. This is a fallacy……..The state does whatever they want to in order to get more deer shot…..Legalize baiting, extend seasons, increase bag limits, no enforcement on bag limits, etc….. ……Just because someone speaks up about the chitty results it has caused doesn’t mean they’re trying to force their ways on everyone…..The chitty hunting has already been forced on many

I joined aldeer in 2003 to argue against buck limits, believing they would open the door to a whole lot more state control of every aspect of hunting without helping the resource at all. It took several years, but the 3 buck limit finally passed. When it did pass, we were killing more does than bucks voluntarily. It didn't require a regulation; people were just convinced it was in their best interest to do so. Now because of the government regulations we are back to killing more bucks than does, but we are only killing half as many deer. I don't see how the hunters or the deer are in any way better off now than they were in 2003, but as I predicted, those pushing buck limits will never be satisfied. In their minds, the problem is that the current buck limit just doesn't go far enough. We just need to reduce it from 3 to 2. Then it will be 2 to 1. Then it will be nobody "needs" to kill a buck every year. So my answer is no. We've never really had a 3 buck limit in place.......only the suggestion of one......Nobody has ever enforced it Of course they haven't; it's unenforceable and that was one of the reasons I was against it. I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for exceeding the season limit on deer or turkeys. They get people for paperwork problems, but never for actually exceeding the limit. I hate unenforceable laws. Only the suckers like me will follow them. Still, the buck limit had a big effect on the deer harvest. We were killing about 50-50 does/bucks with a few more does. The first year the buck numbers went way down and the doe numbers way up. Since then it has gradually equalized so that we now kill more bucks again, but the overall number of deer killed is way down. So how are the hunters or the deer any better off than they were before? And yet people believe even more regulations are the answer? It looks to me like we were far better off with the old system, but no chance of going back to it. The dcnr is making too much money to change it back.

I guess because I’m that way I assume that changing bad laws to better laws (not adding more laws) will have the desired result. You have about convinced me of your position and that changing limits is a waste of time. Btw, all I’m trying to propose is more balance between management minded sportsmen and kill em’ all minded sportsmen. Thanks for your posts.

I disagree about it being unenforceable…….Sure there will never be any rule that gets 100% compliance but other states are able to do a way better job at minimizing the number of folks shooting over the limit than we do……Just because a few will still get away with it is not a reason to do nothing We have far less deer than we used to because everyone has bought into the idea of shooting a bunch of does…..If folks would stop then populations would grow again

“Other states” have a lot of rules (hunting related) that we don’t have.
Some good, some problematic for some people, but idk about “bad”. I’m of the opinion other states care 💯 about the wildlife and Alabama cares about $$$. I went down a rabbit hole looking at other states laws, tags, landowner tags, limits, etc. a week or two ago. First thing is to “bring the pain” on law breakers. I’m naive I’m certain, but I think tags would be better than game check and help some at least. Anyone can put a doe in for a buck just to get a harvest # at the processor. I’ve heard

We have a self imposed limit on our place and some of my guys still won’t even shoot a deer because they killed what they wanted elsewhere and is only hunting a buck of certain size. So because you have a problem, don’t try to push it on everyone else.

I think most of these stories are for public perception more than anything to try and make people think we have an overpopulation issue….It’s funny how you hear the same folks talking about how they need to shoot does badly but for some reason never seem to shoot them…...If there was really an issue they would be posting pics of dead deer getting piled up instead of stories about how bad it is….

Especially with pics or charts/graphs that don’t mean a thing on a property 10-30-80 miles away… Just like other threads, I have enough common sense to know that there are ignorant trackers and good ones. Same as the dog guys.. the bad apples spoil it for the whole crowd, How does the rules and regs read for the farmers with kill permits? Are those deer being figured into your charts and graphs?
