I went back to hunting old school. No corn and no cameras. Setting up between food sources and bedding. Creek crossings, clear cuts and historical trails. Only had a couple of hunts I didn’t see deer. Won’t be long it’s going to be time to start looking for those faint side trails with the several sets of bigger tracks on them and start hunting that. That’s the trail those roaming bucks use. It’s more fun going back to my old ways of hunting. Staring at a corn pile gets boring. And trail cameras has almost costed me my whole season chasing one buck. I’m done with that. Yep. I’m about to trash cams altogether and go back to hunting. Did more old school hunting this year and have enjoyed the season far more.

I shot a doe earlier this season on a cut cornfield that had a feeder on it.
Is that considered baiting? Yes and no... or maybe no and yes... or both or neither... To me, cams and bagged corn are kinda like alcohol and folks. Some folks are responsible with it and can have a good time without abusing and making bad decisions. Some folks are drunks and completely lose their minds at the first sip. I use regular cams and sprinkle a little corn in my planted plots all along. The cams have saved a bunch of decent bucks on my place because I knew what else was on the hoof in the area. I'm not going to tell you how many of those bigger bucks my boys and I have killed, because its an embarrassing percentage. LOL

I think that cell cameras absolutely have been the demise of several bucks that MAY have not been killed when they were otherwise. With that said I think cell cameras also help weekend warriors like myself have better confidence in the spot they’re going. When you only got 1-2 days a week to hunt sometimes it’s harder to keep up with deer like a man that can hunt whenever. I have exactly 1 camera out and it’s just to see my house deer which rarely if ever get shot. With all that being said. The gov needs exactly 0 more say on how we hunt. They can’t manage the regulations they have and we don’t need more. And if a camera helps a man that don’t get to hunt go and have a more enjoyable season then so be it. I try to hold myself to a higher standard when it comes to shooting bucks but trophy management can quickly take the fun out of hunting if you’re not careful.
PS. I have enjoyed not having cameras out this year and I also haven’t bought a bag of corn since probably late October. I hate corn

Agreed guys, hunting has been “dumbed down” to sitting in a box blind. I’m 💯 pointing a finger at myself too. It’s not as fun either, not even close. One of the best years I’ve ever had was between jobs in 02-03. No corn and I killed a pile of bucks. I can still do that, but idk if my boys can (that’s on me).

If that 2yr old tickles your fancy, dump him. I’ve done it and I’m sure I’ll do it again. I like shooting bigger bucks but if I decide I’m ready to kill a deer, everyone is fair game. Cept a button buck. I’m not wearing the pink dress and mop the floors in front of everyone at camp.

I joined aldeer in 2003 to argue against buck limits, believing they would open the door to a whole lot more state control of every aspect of hunting without helping the resource at all. It took several years, but the 3 buck limit finally passed. When it did pass, we were killing more does than bucks voluntarily. It didn't require a regulation; people were just convinced it was in their best interest to do so. Now because of the government regulations we are back to killing more bucks than does, but we are only killing half as many deer. I don't see how the hunters or the deer are in any way better off now than they were in 2003, but as I predicted, those pushing buck limits will never be satisfied. In their minds, the problem is that the current buck limit just doesn't go far enough. We just need to reduce it from 3 to 2. Then it will be 2 to 1. Then it will be nobody "needs" to kill a buck every year. So my answer is no.

I’ve been seeing plenty of deer. Killed plenty of deer. It’s because I got out there and hunted. Those deer are quite easy to kill in daylight when you’re not sitting over bait. They move ALL around it browsing on everything else. Killing them over bait is easy too in some areas. VERY easy. Depends on pressure and surrounding habitat.

I've got at least 4 or 5 bucks to every doe on my hunting land. The camera doesn't lie in this situation. So I don't support the 3 buck limit and don't support lowering it. I need to shoot a pile of bucks to get a 1:1 ratio... but I can't because of the law. Most of the bucks are young and have scrawny racks. They're everywhere! Only rut time do I get a nice buck hang out for a day or two on the property. Way too many bucks.

There’s a lot of pressure around most everything I hunt. I don’t have a Utopia like you think. Is it good? Yeah I’d say above average. It’s taken a whole heck of a lot of work, sweat, money and effort. It certainly ain’t free. Regardless, we still deal with the same things everybody else does. Poaching, road hunting, ppl killing bucks we let walk every year (which is fine). I don’t get upset about it. It’s life.

Being able to go when it’s right and stay home when it ain’t helps. Most folks don’t have that luxury me included. I’m just jealous of the ones that do. When I rotated and had multiple days off in a row I was pretty rough on some pretty good deer. Being a weekend warrior (more specifically Saturday warrior) has changed that.

Yep Marsh, this is the way we did it when deer hunting was meaningful and almost had that magic feeling to it. I can remember the nerves start just hearing steps approaching. I, like many, have probably lost some of the woodsmanship I relied on in the 80’s but you are doing it right

All i know is we have a younger generation that has mostly learned to hunt over corn with the aid of cell cams. They don’t seem to know a lot about woodsmanship.

Your comments and perceptions come across as really bias…..For example, ^^^^^ its as if everyone else just isnt killing deer because they arent the same caliber of hunter and nothing to do with the fact that most everyone else is hunting a fraction of the quality……Its like you’re standing on a hill speaking down to the rest of the crowd with no clue you’re standing on a hill…..Its the same thing that folks didn’t like Chuck for doing…….Being surrounded by the top 5-10% Alabama has to offer and speaking down to everyone else as if we’re all playing the game on the same footing……Meanwhile at least 2/3’s of the counties are in decline

How much habitat improvement have you done this year?
