As if we didn't have enough stuff to worry about these days...
The Kessler Syndrome is what could potentially happen when two satellites collide with one another, the resulting space debris causes more satellites to collide with space junk and this begins an irreversible chain of events until the entire Earth orbit is completely impassable. No more space travel. No more GPS. No more communication satellites. Nothing...
As it is right now with all the Starlink Satellites and many more on the way from SpaceX and other newly competing companies.
Right now a Starlink satellite passes within 1km of another satellite every 11 minutes. Each one has to do 41 maneuvers every year to avoid collision with another. Back in 2018 if a collision had happened scientists calculated that it would have taken 121 days before we reached critical mass and our orbit would become co completely full of space junk that space travel would be impossible.
Now that number of days has been reduced to only 2.8 days.
On a positive note... It will make it harder for the aliens to attack through our wall of space junk.
