From what ive seen, the prices in DG are higher than Publix. I stop in there when I'm in a pinch and dont want to make the 30 minute round trip to Publix. This is by design by DG, which positions it's stores between residential areas and the nearest Walmarks or grocery store.

I watched an old guy recently doing his " grocery shopping " at DG. He didn't look too bad, but I wouldn't do what he's doing. He had 5 cardboard Pizza's and other crap bless his heart.

They’re here to prove the business model:

We have a newly built one about a mile to the east and it’s kept nice condition. The others around are hit or miss as far as cleanliness

Billions in debt, using debt for cash flow. If you stay ahead of it long enough to skim yours who cares if it crashes after you leave.

I don't do processed food, cheap clothing, or bad beer, so I rarely need to ever go in one. Mainly if I go in to one it's because it's closer the the grocery store and I need some eggs, milk or bacon for breakfast. (And I have bought cheap beer there...)

They count roofs , then see where Walmart and any other competition is. The company I used to work for builds their store fixtures.

DG put up a grocery store not too far from me, and believe it or not, it's really nice with competitive prices on food The DG markets are pretty nice and well stocked . We live about 1/2 way between a regular DG and a DG market . Both are fairly new stores . They come in handy in a pinch. Retail history lesson , bout 15 years ago when DG was really growing , Walmart wanted to get into that market, by building mini Walmarts . They built a few test mini Walmarts , one was in Gurley on HWY 72 . It didn't go over well ........it's now a DG market.

They built a new Family Dollar right across the road from the DG by my house. It's closing already and hasn't been opened a year yet. It’s that way in Hayneville in lowndes county too except they both are thriving. Never knew they were connected.

There’s one in the middle of a neighborhood over here in Columbus (not too far from the Columbus Speedway). Strangest location I’ve seen yet. You don’t save as much in the store, but you sure save on the “commute” around here anyway.

You don’t save as much in the store, but you sure save on the “commute” around here anyway. Its not a secret. DG uses population density, local economic data, and traffic flow patterns to select their store locations. If there is a spot in the middle of what seems like nowhere but it hits their metric number those three categories they will put a store there. That is why you see a DG at a random county road intersection with a full parking lot of customers.

Two completely different companies . Sometimes they (DG and FD) are just like Auto Zone and Advanced Auto , right next to each other , or at least in sight of each other. Correction , looks like Dollar Tree sold off Family Dollar just this year to a couple of equity firms at a loss.

It will be taught in business schools. DG mentioned that they were considering purchasing Family Dollar so as to compete better with Dollar Tree. Family Dollar was and still is a disaster. Dollar Tree took the bait and way over-bid for Family Dollar and bought a sinking ship that they could not do much of anything with.

Yep , DT bought FD in 2015 for 8 Billion , just sold it this year for 1 billion.

The only time I have ever been in one of those nasty dollar stores I was checking out and the obese cashier farted and burped simultaneously. The only time I have ever seen anyone do that.
