Our school played them in the second round. We might as well had been playing UNA. It is insane how good they are and you can’t take that away from them.
It is what it is, but I do feel like they definitely have an advantage for players when you sit in the middle of a town with a population of 42,000 vs most 3a school towns are populations 6,000 or less. Our whole county population is only 29,000. So the pool to choose from is definitely less.
I’m not hating on them they have one heck of a program.

You are right they do have a more people close to the school. Most private schools are in cities. But they do compete with larger public schools for enrollment. I also know that players will drive over an hour to go to your school if your program is attractive enough. But you are right it is an advantage.

Considering Mars Hill didn’t have a football program until recent times. There’s numerous public schools in the are along with other private Christian schools.

Mars Hill is still a small school by comparison. They do have excellent financial backing. The church I grew up in has as one of the bigger contributors and many of my church friends went there.

The shoals area has produced many great athletes

They are probably 2A size playing 3A. Since they won next year they will have to play 4A I’m sure.

I think I read where the coach has been there 9-10 years so still relatively new

One of the families that I know donates to MH and has been for years and years. I know of only one family member that has gone to the school. Instead they went to public schools. Go figure.

For that family, philanthropy started with their dad and continues on I’m not so sure it has been about sports, rather it is something to pass along. Hey but things may have changed. I don’t keep up with such things these days. I just know where that families heart is and the legacy their dad created.

I grew up in 4th Street COC in Tuscumbia. It was often called Woody Walkers Church however that’s not the family I’ve spoke of. The church’s founders were heavy into funding MH. Often asked for donations way back when. When I’d heard they were gonna form a football team I was surprised. It was mentioned way back when but dismissed because football was thought to be violent in nature. I’m pushing 60 so way back when is 40-50 yrs ago.

The family I mentioned do not attend church and one I don’t think ever has yet freely gives as one as blessed should.

Jackson is a public school that invests in its program. Lots of kids go there to play football. Proves my point.

Private schools are allowed to manipulate their enrollment numbers by saying who can go school there and who can't. Public schools don't have that option unless its an out of district kid. That itself is enough to say that private and public schools should be seperated

We’ve discussed this before and you do have a point. But the county schools are shrinking organically so they don’t really need to limit enrollment. But if that’s your argument, wouldn’t the multiplier and success penalty negate that?

They are choosing to ignore the multiplier, success penalty, and “public schools” like saraland being able to recruit and take transfers.

6A is tough. And that Clay Chalkville team is not the norm. They beat Thompson this year which is no easy feat.

Gotta pay to get the best Jimmy’s and Joe’s out of Birmingham to put together the best ball team. I wish they would just reclassify the Big time High School program’s that want to do what they do in putting these Elite teams together. Put them all in a league of their own and they can be on a somewhat even playing field together- St. Thomas Aquino’s, IMS, Bishop Gorman, Mater Dai, etc…They can all Big time it together and fly around the country and see who has the best recruiting for their high school’s.

Yeah that way everyone gets a trophy. Not just the good teams that make their program better.

And how do they make it better? By buying players and facilities with rich peoples money. Too easy to just buy a better team. Same thing that has ruined college ball.

I know a lot of the private and city schools around mobile do fundraisers. One thing you have to keep in mind is, at private school… ALL the money is raised. There is no government there handing them money. So the attitude with parents and administrators is different. The parents foot the bill for everything. If they want something, they go make it happen.

Public school attitude is obviously we get what we get and then we complain about it.
