Once again, we see private schools composing a significant number of finalists in the 1A-4A ranks (3 out of the 8 this year). IMO it’s past time for the AHSAA to exclude them from the playoffs. Feel free to allow them to mix it up in the regular season, but come playoff time schools that can recruit and have non-teachers as head coaches have no business being included.

So no public school recruits? You ever wondered why the nice apartments exist close to the school? And all private schools recruit? You ever see how many private schools get drummed in football? Why don’t we just give them all trophies and call it even.

Dude all the schools recruit now, it’s not just private and never has been. X2. Not to mention private schools are already being hit with the enrollment muliplier BS. What is the actual problem you see with 3/8 finalists being private schools?

Sure some schools recruit and that’s been going on for years. It’s far more than just recruiting though - it’s the resources. And the multiplier doesn’t solve the issues.

Dude all the schools recruit now, it’s not just private and never has been. Exactly. It was happening when I was in school almost 40 years ago.

It’s the same argument every year. It’s not private schools, it’s resources in most cases. It’s the haves and the haves not. Why do you expect these to be equal? There is no rule about how many resources a school can apply to its football program. So why don’t the public schools apply more resources to it? Because they choose not to. “We can’t afford it” is garbage. Go work hard and raise the money. Make it a priority and apply some energy to it. It’s such a socialist attitude to want to separate people because they have worked hard to apply resources to a program and the outcome is better than yours. Do you think black people from poor families should get preference over kids that come from hard working families as far as college goes? Of course not. It’s the same attitude you are applying to this situation.

Bamarich2 if it’s such a problem then why don’t the public schools that are unhappy leave the AHSAA and start their own association? They don’t have to be a member of the AHSAA. I’ll tell you why, because they don’t want to do the work it would take to make that happen. Winning football games and all that comes along with it is not a priority to them.

It's never going to be equal --- The closest they have is to have the different 1-7, then the aia schols. Kick it off, see what happens.
It's the same way in all the sports, isn't it. It doesn't matter if it's the high schools, colleges, pros ---- some spend it, some don't.

Should the AHSAA also exclude city schools that have broken away from the local public school system? They're nothing more than a private school without the "private school" label. They offer the same "scholarships" that private schools offer.

OP has a point but not sure there's a good solution. My now HS Sr. retired from Thompson baseball after his 10th grade year. When it's time for the tryouts, and there are as many kids 'trying out' from surrounding schools and states, it's gets disheartening for the HS athlete that isn't D1 material. Golf on the other hand as been great! No recruiting there yet

They’re not AISA schools are they? If the private schools are taking the government money then they can play ball in the AHSA. Catholic in Montgomery played in the AHSA a long time.

You are a kid that grew up in a community playing ball with all your buddies and are now starting High School with them. Suddenly, it doesn't matter that you grew up there and that you and your family have been representing the community for years. You are now replaced by athletes "recruited" from other areas because the school system wants to have a winning team. High school athletics will soon be no different than college athletics complete with benefits for the recruited athletes family for moving them there. It's already that way in some places really, just kind of hidden. I have always said and always will, athletics and education should be separated.
The true mark of a man is not how he conducts himself during times of prosperity, but how he conducts himself during times of adversity.

We have the same problem in Georgia schools. Here, we have divisions and regions within those divisions (as is typical for most states) to determine what schools play whatever other school within their division. Apparently the divisions do not apply to private / military schools. The private / military schools will skip around and play different divisions throughout the year before settling into a particular division at the end of the year.
My son who plays for a 4A school played (what shouod be) a 1A school. I do not understand why the Georgia high school association has divisions for the public schools, but the others can play in whatever division they decide to play. It makes zero sense.

Kids live with their grand parent per the address listed. Schools have a habit of this kind or recruitment. They are in the finals year after year. It’s all about winnng.

It’s the same attitude you are applying to this situation. It's pretty obvious from some of these comments that there's a lot of assumptions made that aren't factual. For instance, it's not as simple as "go work hard and raise the money". In some systems, and I've had experience in one of them, school boards put strict limitations on how monies can be raised and in some instances how monies that are raised can be spent. The last sentence you wrote isn't even a close comparison. No one is asking for preferential treatment... only that there's a somewhat level playing field. And right now in the AHSAA, there isn't one and eventually they will have to do something about it.

No recruiting there yet The latest "solution" the AHSAA kicked around from my understanding was to allow private and public to play during the regular season, but establish a playoff system under the AHSAA umbrella for the private schools desiring to play in AHSAA. We have a private school system in Alabama... when I heard that idea my first thought was "why don't they play in that system?" IMO, AHSAA is reluctant to do anything here because of $$$... private schools bring a lot of $$$ to the table.
