There’s two main factors that are keeping the green area from seeing the same impact as the rest of the state……

1) Its more rural with fewer number of parcels (squares) and less urban areas
2) It’s a farther distance from Atlanta and Florida….Most of the increase in out of state hunters has been absorbed by the other counties

That seems very odd. Wonder what’s the reasoning in that?

A good bit of Louisianans hunt the west side of the state though.

CNC, doesn’t your presumption leave out the fact that the green area includes some of the best managed part of the state

Marengo, Dallas, Clarke, and Wilcox counties are farther from Florida than Lawrence, Morgan, Cullman, etc????????

It’s the average number of parcels per 10,000 acres of land (or whatever acreage you want to put it in)…….Baiting opened up thousands of new parcels to potentially be corned and hunted and hunters filled them…..Far fewer parcels to be filled in the green area. It's mostly rural and full of large tracts

I'm presuming the green area is the least impacted......How am I leaving that out?......I'm not following

Harold, you need to move South Monroe Co. over into the red area after the weekend we had. There was a bunch of hungry coonasses there this weekend and we shot enough deer to feed have the town we live in. Our neighbors are probably really piss at us right now but we don’t care. Heck we live 2 states over so if we kill every deer there it’s no big deal to us. We will just keep spending all that money we spend there and take up squirrel hunting if there’s no more deer.
Seriously though, we had 12 people in camp and 6 deer were killed. I really wish we would have kept a running total of deer seen this weekend. I can tell you I saw 37 deer while on stand. 42 deer total on the property. By far the most deer I’ve ever seen in the history of me hunting in Alabama. Everyone that hunted saw multiple deer on every hunt. I’m not sure what’s happening but we are happy with it. Unbelievable numbers on our place. Next trip they may all be gone but at least we got to see them.

Actually I probably should have included Conecuh in with the green......

I sent a message to the group. Still have 2 guys yet to report back. So far we are at 89 deer seen while in the stands. Most hunts were in different stands in different areas. Some stands were hunted multiple times and could be the same deer. We are talking deer sightings. And several of us didn’t hunt the afternoons due to kitchen responsibilities, if you know what I mean. Just crazy numbers for us.

Since you can shoot 2 a day now, you have the tools to get rid of those excess deer...

But there’s no way I can convince my group to shoot them. The grand total was 123 deer sightings. Yes some of those I’m sure were the same deer seen multiple times at certain locations but it’s still way more then has ever been seen before. The conditions were right. First hunts of the season, perfect weather conditions and much more open areas due to some new clear cuts, and a ton of acorns. None of the 6 deer killed was around a corn pile. 1 was killed in a food plot. All the others were either in the acorns or traveling from acorns back to bedding areas. Our place will have a 10 day rest before we go back. Hopefully the 2 guys we are bringing with us will want to shoot a couple does because my buddy and I have all the venison we need. We are hunting antlers now.

Again something about these numbers that will likely show itself more as the season goes on is that counties, like Marshall for example, show 29% decreases in doe harvest right now on the map because its comparing them to being at 65% last year on this date and 36% this year.……65-36=29…….…In reality though they’ve shot about half as many deer this season up to this date……Unless the trend changes there’s a good chance we end up around that level by the end of the season…..

We still have 10 more weeks left to go but…….. I’m gonna say a good portion of north Alabama will be down 20-40% by the end of the year with a few outliers maybe even higher……I’m gonna say that for the most part the green zone I marked on the map will be within single digits of where they’ve been running every year for the last 6 years……The southeastern quadrant is what is still up in the air…….We should come in within 5% or so of last season….or within reason….. but I think we may still see the doe harvest percentages climb to +10-20% though…….

If it helps anyone here is a map showing how I tend to mentally break down the counties into groups when looking at the numbers and how change may or may not be effecting any given area….Divide the state into two major zones between North and South Alabama then again into sub groups within each of those zones…..It isnt perfect but something kind of like this.....
