Took my 2 oldest son's (8yr and 7yr old) on their first WMA hunt this morning. People parked in the spot we wanted to go, so we parked to go sit a foodplot. Got close to the foodplot and saw an orange cap hanging on the trail entrance to the foodplot, so we turned around and went back to the truck. At the truck, my middle son found a nice buck track crossing the road. So I told them let's see where he's headed and went straight into the thicket. Found a nice little bowl to sit in and woods opened up a bit, so we sat on the ground. We'll wouldn't you know it at 7:30am a buck and 2 does come up 20yds behind us and had no clue we were there. One of my sons was asleep the other rolled up in his hunting jacket with his face covered. I reacted wrong and tried to get the boys attention and during that spooked the deer. Coming off of youth season my focus was to get them on the deer, but looking back now I wish I wouldve just pulled up and shot one of them especially the buck which looked like a decent 7pt, not a monster by no means but nice. After that those kids were fired up and we enjoyed the rest of the morning with a good walk and a trip to the check-in station. Great day we will never forget.
