I explored this question myself…Believe the results or not !

One year on an Army base I drew what I would usually consider a crappy spot, it was on what one would call a runway overrun area on an alternate landing area that never got used. Anyway, it was tall-ish grass that got mowed a few times per year. I was in an old permanent tree-stand amongst some oak trees off to the side of this overrun. To entertain myself I tried crazy experiments. I’ll shorten a season long story and go straight to the corn. On this day I put four different items about 50 yards apart just to see what deer would go to. I watched a deer come a thousand yards to 1 handful of corn. This day also told me that a man that thinks a deer can’t smell them is crazy.

Yes they can smell it !
