I am buy my grandson a rifle for Christmas, I really don't want to spend a lot of money on one. The local gun store has the Wetherby on sale and has a caliber 308 which I was looking to get. Anyone on here know anything about these rifles.

Mine is a bit heavy for my liking. I dont particularly like the drop plate either. I bought mine to be a shooting house rifle so the weight dont bother me too much. Really good shooting gun with a smooth action. Mine is a 257wbymag. I reckon its killed something every time i pulled the trigger.

I think they're good. Another good choice is a Ruger American.

I second the Ruger American suggestion. Look at the compact version…….it is short and lightweight. If you end up adding a suppressor to it then it is still not overly long. Reasonably priced and accurate too.

I think of the vanguard more as a shooting range because of the heft, but what about stevensmossberg patriot

I won one in a drawing last year. 6.5 creedmore.
It shoots great. But you have to find the ammo it likes.
I found one out of three boxes. But gonna keep looking cause I
Ain’t in love with the one it shoots. Groups great with that one ammo.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
My phone screen does not always work right, usually a lot of misspelled words....

Deerman since your an old head I'll share that the weatherby is good to go
Also the CVA scout comes in .308 and the Stevens 334 is a Turkish import that just flat shoots.

I have a vanguard 308. Personally the fit and finish of the gun is much nicer than a Ruger American or other entry level guns. Mine shoots 1” group with the cheapest ammo I could buy.

I have one in .243 and it is one of my top two, if not the top shooter I have.
If you come across anyone that has something negative to say about them, especially considering the cost, they aren't being fair or honest.

Wishing Weatherby would come out with lightweight version in the $500-700 range. They are a little heavy, but built really well. I got one about 35 years old that has held up well and is about 1MOA.

Depends on the age of the boy...not sure I'd like putting a $500+ gun in the hand of a preteen.
I bought a Savage Axis from Academy that turned out to be a really great little rifle for under $400 w/ a scope. Got it in 6.5CM to avoid higher recoil for a 10yr old. He's 14 now and just killed two deer with it in Arkansas this season. There's a Ruger Predator Gen 2 waiting for him under the tree, also in 6.5CM, now that he's a little older and will more likely take care of it.
I really like the Weatherbys and such, just cautious about putting really nice equipment in the hands of young ones...

Only complaint is they are heavy and like carrying a 2x4 in the woods.
They Shoot great and solid for the price point though.
Well, the way I see it is there's just too many assholes
