If you pour a bag of corn on the ground, they can't see it unless they walk by it.
How far away can they smell it?
Do they see other deer feeding and walk over to see what is happening?
My cousin asked me and I wasn't sure.

they can smell it. Put a little molasses on top and it won't take them as long to find. Once they find they will keep coming back

Smell. Think that’s why deer draw and flavor corn works quicker.

I use apple corn or rice bran when I first start feeding in a new spot. Once they know where it’s at I just feed corn.

The first 1/2 bag is scattered like a covey of quail, other half small piles. They will find it. Then in the area keep it out.

My father in law always soaked some in water in a bucket for two or three days before starting a new corn pile . He seemed to think it would start to get a bit of a fermented small to it which they would smell further away. It never took them long to find it.

He seemed to think it would start to get a bit of a fermented small to it which they would smell further away. It never took them long to find it. Just don’t do this. Aflatoxins produce down to 60 degrees and are terrible for deer and turkeys. Same with the whole Mountain Dew thing.

This ain't rocket science. If a deer walks downwind in the vicinity of a corn pile they will be on it. Yep. It’s corn. They will find it within two days. Spread it some preferably. Im sure that if you dropped a couple of unopened bags of corn on the ground and set up a camera you would have pics of deer sniffing it within a day.

I usually toss out a couple of very ripe and/or half mashed up apples in the immediate vicinity of any new feed spots. If I can smell the apples from several yards away, the deer can smell them from 2 counties away.

Most particularly until most days get fairly cold. Same goes with piles in warm weather

Clorox stumps from SW Louisiana all the way up to NE Missouri!! My ole buddy in Missouri is still pouring it out on that same Osage tree stump. The deer just about got it licked down to the roots.
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chews your a$$ all day long.

Probably smell it when their buddy poops it out and then drive the other deer crazy trying to find it. Seriously though, most can smell it quickly further than you will think. Kind of makes you have more of an appreciation for how good they can smell. keep an eye for any signs of dampness or mold on corn or anything else exposed to moisture. Those toxins are dangerous to animals. I had a 40 gal feeder flood one time with the corn starting to rot before I could get back to it. Luckily the corn would not come out and the feeder stop working. Talking about some nasty mash. I pulled it out of the woods and cleaned it out. I would mix in some better feed like roasted soybeans or peanuts to give them some extra protein, especially in summer and fall to help with overall growth including antler growth. May want to add some salt or mineral blocks to the area too.
