The “quality” of the management occurring in our state is bottom of the barrel.
If that is the case, then you'd better go ahead and turn Otis and pups into pets then, because it aint gonna get any better with the way it is being run. I've been complaining about it on here for the past 14 yrs. The shoot'em all, I've got to kill a "rack" buck to be a man crowd, and the "if I can kill ten basket rack 6 and 8 points a year and 10-15 does, I'm proving to everyone that I am a great hunter attitude" has been exceptionally detrimental to any person or group trying to grow bucks into the mature age classes and it's not just one county or one area, it is statewide. And the people that are supposed to be managing the resource for all, and most importantly for the benefit of the wildlife, are encouraging it. Bama's buck age structure is a mere shadow of what it was back in the late 80s and early 90s.

Well put Abolt. And I really wouldn’t want to see Otis living on the couch…we need good dogs and good dog men.

Yes we do, and I love seeing Harold's stories and pictures of his dogs on successful tracks in the tracking thread. We need to drastically lower the bag limits, shorten the gun season, make corn illegal again and actually enforce it this time, and let a whole lot more young bucks walk, all over this state. But this is Alabama, so nothing is going to get fixed or happen on the matter.

We’re on the same page. I detailed in another thread why Oklahoma has become a destination state. Lack of management friendly regs in AL is exactly why more and more high fences are going up, whether we like it or not.

I have really been giving it some thought over the last couple of years for that very reason knowing that Otis is coming down to the end of his run and I’ll need to replace him with a pup if I plan to keep doing in the future……There’s no sign of it getting better anytime soon though……only potentially worse…..I’m not sure we’ve seen rock bottom yet for how far we can run it in the ground…. Its probably about time for me to go futher and do other…….There’s just very little “market” now for recovering good bucks in Alabama and what little is there is being fought over like scraps….…..Its just glaringly obvious when you watch whats occurring with trackers in other states where they have much better management occurring

Yall need to read the thread about howl in the general forum and just accept things as the way they are. Some people on here still manage to kill good bucks maybe we need to listen to them. You ain't going to ever get everyone on the same page. Bass tournaments have taken the fun out of fishing and bickering hurts deer hunting

Valid point. I still struggle with the fact that if you can do better, you ought to.

CNC my wife is driving me to my neck doctor in Huntsville. I get bored with to much time on my hands. I just know farmers want them shot the insurance people want them shot. A lot of people don't have the big land opportunities some of us have so they bait them and shoot them. It is not a way of life to them . I don't get near as tore up because I do it all. Duck hunting and crappie fishing in the winter is my favorite. Also I got a new farm to start trapping beavers on in the morning. I ain't no expert and I ain't telling nobody elsehow to hunt it ain't my right

Uh, that sounds like she dropped you off at the pokey (at least that was my experience!)

Deer movement has come to a crawl where I'm at. The muzzleloader hunters must have killed all the deer.

It's not because it's 80 degrees and there's acorns a foot deep in the woods. It's those black powder hunters !!!!

I do not......I would imagine the insurance folks do though. I'm sure they have pretty detailed information about the number of deer/vehicle collisions occurring annually and probably even a map showing hot spots for it.....
