Cotton is not a preferred food now and never has been The deer in my area would strongly disagree. I have seen them eat the boll's and they weren't starving. I'm talking butterball fat, very high in protein.

My first thought would be what can I provide on my land that a deer would prefer to eat over cotton. That would seem to be a pretty low bar.
If we are talking soybeans or corn, that is a different story all together. Deer love eating young cotton plants. I've seen cotton fields where the first few rows from the edge produced virtually no cotton due to deer browsing.

Insurance companies would push for night hunting from moving cars on the interstate if it they thought the public would allow it. So you have farmers pushing to kill deer, and insurance companies greasing pockets to change laws to kill as many deer as possible.
I will guarantee you that the insurance companies are funding the release of wolves & propaganda behind doing it, that are destroying hunting in the midwest.

"this is ridiculous. I have a real issue with baiting corn on a depredation permit. I also have an issue making it part of a for profit venture. And I'm kinda sick of them gut shooting them to die on my land."
Yup. If the didn't want deer he wouldn't be attracting them with corn. Sounds like a dirtbag gaming the system. Y'all are correct, Sirs.
"Why do you ask"?

Personally, if there is ever a gray area I would side with the farmer every time.
I will add I have seen deer do some serious measurable damage to a cotton field, second only to what they will do to a peanut field. If the farmer is within his legal rights then leave him alone and let him try to make his living. His profession is almost certainly more difficult than pretty much anyone else.

There are some actual farmers on this board. How many would intentionally focus on attracting and maintaining a huntable population of hogs?

The farmer should be concerned about being a good neighbor and not being selfish.

Personally, if there is ever a gray area I would side with the farmer every time. I feel like the bait is to draw them to a desired location in the field. They’re coming to the field, regardless. Don’t necessarily agree with pay hunts for hogs on the depredation permit, though. Shooting is education for other hogs in the sounder, trapping is a much more effective method for depopulation.

The new crew (that grossly overbid/outbid us for what it is) started at 4 and ended up with only 2 hunters and I don’t think they ever hit their number of does agreed upon.

Depredation permits are tightly controlled and have very specific limitations, rules and timelines. They are species specific and most require you to leave any deer killed where it lays and you are prevented from removing antlers. It is possible to for a farmer to have a deer depredation permit and not a hog permit. Not sure that you can charge a hunter to shoot deer or use bait under the permit but I could be wrong. In some cases, fields are inspected following a "management" event. Also, some hunters intentionally gut shoot the deer or hogs so they will run off of the field and expire somewhere else.
Either way, you are right that an aggressive number of deer taken under a permit can reduce the population in close proximity to the target farm. Do the same thing over several years and you really see a change.

The club I grew up on SC was this way we HAD to kill so many or we would lose our lease. We would man drive and dog drive those islands of woods and strips of woods between fields at the end of the season after we had still hunted them to death or nocturnal… it was awesome. You could run the barrel hot on a 12 ga on some of those hunts. We put the full court press on their asses.. No way you could ever meet quota with 4 or let alone 2 people hunting lol the farmer would laugh and say yall are done pack your stuff. We hunted around 12 family members on 900ac and killed around 40 a year every year…. And believe it or not a couple 130+ wall hangers every year.. for like 35 years. My dad and I were members 20 years.

Y’all are kinda making my point for me……The farmer will kick off the hunters from his land if they arent killing everything they see basically……If I’m a neighbor of this property or even in the neighborhood…..why do I want to shoot all of the deer on my property as well??.....Sounds like I’m just being hoo-dooed into believing that’s in my best interest……
Folks that know don't shoot old does........

Not just farmers. I hunted a property growing up that participated in a DMAP program. The site recommendation by the state biologist was to remove 75 does a year for three years and a buck target. It was a 5,000 acre plantation and only about 10 of us hunted it. After three years, we saw a reduction in deer and a reluctance of does to show themselves during daylight or in fields.

Well according to Aldeer you should be able to use every square inch of your property any legal way you want, neighbors be damned. So there’s the answer.
