I heard on fox business that gas could go up 20-40 cents per gallon due to Sandy. Anybody heard this?

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I've been predicting for over a year that the gas prices would miraculously fall right before the election. I haven't kept up lately. Is the price per barrel dropping? Is it OPEC that's causing this? I can't imagine the "evil" oil companies, refineries, or local c-stores deliberately lowering gas prices going into this election. Or maybe they are. After all, I think they've all made more money under Obama than at any other time in history.

Oil prices are rising because 70+% of the refineries, east coast, were closed for a period of time due to the storms. With the election looming I hope they go up. It will help the cause

Summer blends are more expensive to produce. We are rotating to winter blends, so a $.20/gal drop is expected.

Yeah. What i meant was that IF prices rise it will be due to speculation and the refinery production due to the storm

What I learned in College economics is that Demand drives supply and when supply is down, prices are higher. So...If there is a report stating that prices will go up and everyone tries to rush to fill up, wouldnt that increase demand and increase the price? Im just saying that sometimes we can be our own worst enemy.

Not disagreeing with this - I admit that I don't have any idea, but I've never heard of this until a couple of months ago. I never noticed gas skyrocketing in the spring and summer and, nose diving in the fall and winter until the last couple of years. It seemed like in the 80's, 90's, and most of the last decade prices fluctuated much less throughout the year. Is this summer blend something new as a result of EPA?

circa 1990

Quote:
So what's the difference between summer-grade fuel and winter-grade fuel? Summer-grade fuel is more expensive for two reasons -- because of the ingredients it contains and because refineries have to briefly shut down before they begin processing it. Summer-grade fuel also burns cleaner than winter-grade fuel. This just means that it produces less smog and releases less toxic air pollutants, which we'll talk about more [source: EPA]. The actual difference in cost of production varies. One estimate claims an increase of only 1 cent to 2 cents per gallon [Source: Slate], while another states 3 cents to 15 cents per gallon [Source: Reason]. No matter the difference in production costs, the increase at the pump is even greater, owing to the summer driving season, dips in supply, maintenance costs and companies' converting to production of summer blends.

Quote:
First, one of the biggest differences is the RVP (Reid Vapor Pressure) of the gasoline. Winter gasoline made for cooler climates has a higher RVP number- meaning it is more volatile. The higher RVP number means the gasoline in your tank is under more pressure. This is why come warmer months, the RVP number must be lower, or the high pressure could result in the gasoline boiling or evaporating, causing an increase in air pollution.

Second, winter gasoline contains more butane. Butane doesn't burn as clean as other "ingredients" in gasoline, but it is far cheaper to mix into gasoline. With the added butane in winter gasoline, you may notice that fuel economy suffers until the warmer months, when refiners cease using as much butane in each gallon. Butane has the highest vapor pressure of just about any other ingredient, coming in over 50psi, which is why summer gasoline doesn't use as much. If it would, the RVP number would be as high as winter gasoline.

Other reasons for higher prices are added oxygenates. These are also added to summer gasoline to lower the RVP number. Typically, winter gasoline has a RVP number of over 10. Come summer, some areas require gasoline that has a RVP number of 7 (for the most populated cities) or 7.8 (for populated cities in cooler climates). In other areas, the RVP must not exceed 9.

To add in, gasoline prices typically rise in the Spring for a few reasons. First, refiners are shutting production and performing maintenance so facilities run with minimal problem during the summer driving season. Second, with all the different blends of gasoline, refiners must alter their production to start producing many different blends of gasoline. This means that supply of summer fuels is slowly increasing, but supply of conventional fuel (for areas with no pollution requirements on gasoline) drops, resulting in higher prices for everyone, no matter what gasoline you burn. Typically supply and other disruptions are sorted out by the start of the driving season, which is why many times prices will stop rising after Memorial Day.
