It was interesting that we (The CIA) ran this totally separate covert war in Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam war and few normal citizens even knew about it. It was the largest paramilitary operation the CIA has ever undertaken and they ran it like their own personal kingdom. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam were all artificial constructs, created by the French to try to hold on to their colonies after WWII, but after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, it all fell apart. (Putting a base at Dien Bien Phu was dumb as shit to begin with, but the French are not known for their military prowess.)
It's a shame that we left so many Hmong behind to face persecution, torture and death at the hands of their rivals the Pathet Lao when it all crashed down for us in 1974. I know that a lot of rank and file Special Operations troops were pretty torn up about that and probably still are.
The United States sold a lot of heroin to fund it all. Produce heroin in Southeast Asia, transport it with Air America, use the Mafia to distribute it to black folks in the cities in the 1960's and 70's, and use the money to fight Communism.
It is a dichotomy that in many cases you have to become almost as evil as your enemy in order to defeat him.
If anyone is interested in taking a deep dive, read "A Legacy of Ashes" by Time Weiner. It is a critical history of the CIA, so if you are a bit Rah Rah USA person that believes we can do no wrong, it might not be the book for you. It is a complete history, but there are chapters that cover this whole time period in the book.
If anyone is interested in a military read about the time period, that is pretty fun, morbid and fascinating... "The Devil's Guard" is a book about a bunch of former Nazi SS troops that after WWII are given a new identity by the French Foreign Legion and tasked with fighting in Vietnam in the late 1940's and early 1950's. It is a hell of a ride to read it. Needless to say these former Nazi SS guys weren't playing games out there.
