Just an FYI and I am by no means an expert on fishing tailrace or for SM. However, a friend and I drove up from Alabaster and fished it for 10 hours with artificial baits. Only one SM caught. A few drum and stripe. Saw a few boats fishing live bait catch a couple SM and lots of drum and a few stripes. Around 10:30 or so many were leaving. Another friend of mine that lives in Athens and fishes up there all the time only caught two SM. Seems the SM bite is pretty slow.

Warm temps imo. Was always told “when u gotta wear a jacket is when the sm bite is on”.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Smallmouth fishing is the most hot/cold things I ever done but I do remember early December being the best time to catch them below the dam.

Some of my best days I had to dip the rod to remove ice from the eyes and blow out the worm gear.

Smallies is all I target and I've caught my biggest ones during the coldest ugliest days on the water. I don't fish in the fall til the water gets cold.

My uncle, Jerry Crook, was a guide there for years. A white plastic swim bait, bouncing it off the rocks will usually catch a lot of fish. We would toss it into the boils and drift, with a tight line. The first small mouth I ever caught, was in the tailrace at Wheeler. 5.75 pounds. Fun times.
Here's to champagne for my real friends and real pain for my sham friends.
