Anyone on this forum familiar with it? My father doesn't talk about his service, ever. One word answers when asked. He's misplaced or tossed out most of his medals, pins, etc. I found a MACV-SOG pendant recently tucked away in a desk.

Wondering if any others here who served in Vietnam were associated with it.

Do you have absolute proof ? Was he injured several times? I don’t think any of them escaped an injury. Plenty of MACV-SOG guys talk about their service.

They were the ultimate bad asses and they were used as bait for the most part.

They have seen and performed the ugliest of the ugly.

MACV-SOG, or Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group

Of all the books I have read on the 2nd world war and Vietnam. I still cant comprehend how anyone from MACV-SOG survived. If you read their accounts it's nothing short of a miracle they survived.

All of the true ones I’ve ran across don’t know how they made it out either. They seem to credit it to the indigenous people they worked with, each other, Budweiser Beer, God, Luck, turning savage, and Fire Support.

The fat electrician (Nic) on YouTube has a piece on Robert Howard who was a living badass from Opelika that's really good.

Golden arrow research is a great place to get records for military service. They turned up a lot after the national military archives couldn't for my grandpa. It even had a letter my great grandpa wrote for grandpa.

No, I don't. And I'm not claiming he was. He won't talk about any of it. None. Never has. Just kinda clams up and nobody presses him on it.

He did multiple tours. He was injured multiple times. My step mother was a nurse and that's how she met him after an injury. I found a handful of pins. No patches yet. That pin was one of them.

So that's why I was asking. I know he also spent time as a helicopter gunner. I have a photos of that, among many others. He spent a career in the army and retired in the early 80's. Multiple injuries. Multiple tours. Retired in Fort Hood Tx.

Had I not known he was military, you'd never know it at all. Anyone who met him after the 80's wouldn't know he was military if they didn't recognize the signs of military. The walk, talk, etc..

That's why I was surprised when I found the pin.

There were many “associated” with it, operations wise. Say your dad was a door gunner on an extraction or infiltration of SOG guys…Thats very important and Hell itself !

You’ll only know if you pull records what his specialty was. Even if you pull records it doesn’t show the whole story, tons of men and women that get pulled for support missions like driving convoys for instance, end up in knarly battles.

In the Shawn Ryan interview the Mac V Sog guy was saying they all had to sign a non disclosure for everything they did that was at least 20 years or longer. The stories he was telling were just crazy. It was a different kind of warfare.

Sad thing is Robert Howard did not claim Opelika as his home.

Jack Carr the author of Terminal List just put out a book from the dad’s perspective as a MACVSOG operator. First time I had heard of it. True bad asses.

My dad said these guys were attached to them for some time. He was drafted and served with 1/92 field artillery. The stories I heard later in his life were crazy. Being in Cambodia 6 months before Nixon announced we were going there. In sterilized tiger striped fatigues. Anyone who actually put boots on the ground in that place outside the wire are at the top of my respect list.
