Never cared for swimming at the beach. Fishing can be great. Camping out is fun. I suggest finding a beach you can drive and camp on that also has good fishing at the time you go. As few people as possible would improve things as well.

I realize that's not what most people do, but what most do is a miserable experience as far as I'm concerned.

I never go during holidays or weekends which are really never overcrowded anyways. I go during the week and off season and its desolate.

It reminds me of so many parks out west, you wanna die…have at it ! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

This place is great if you like camping and being alone, my company has a plant right across the border in Matamoros. We camped out there a couple of weekends and I loved it, We also went to the Mexico side, but there are too many less than desirable folks out there.

Gomer,

You're not as ugly as I thought you were.

I'm glad yo posted those pictures, I've been meaning to get me some beach fishing gear and just start fishing. I think it will make me feel less worthless when I'm out on the beach smokin' and drankin'. I'll still be doing that, but at least I'll be doing productive stuff.

They have a public boardwalk area with restrooms and showers called Malaquite beach but I usually don’t light there, I drive on down the beach generally about 7 miles but sometimes 55 miles. I just drive my rig up to the water and pop open a Corona. My toes in the water and azz in the sand. Teenagers looking for a party would hate it.

Do it! And honestly you don't need any fancy gear unless you just want fancy gear. My "beach/saltwater" gear consists of:

a $50ish Ugly Stick catfish spinning combo
a $75ish 7' medium-heavy baitcaster that I also use bass fishing at home
a 9' 8wt fly rod

I also have a dedicated 9' surf rod for cut bait but I rarely use it

My father was stationed in Corpus Christie so I spent plenty of time on Padre Island. I was far too young but a section of it was topless optional. I remember you could drive on the beach too. I remember the Portuguese Man of Wars popping under the truck tires as we drove down the beach sitting in the bed. Won't do that in Alabama.

Double red flags are incredibly rare, in my experience. And when they happen, it’s warranted. I’m going to keep going. beers

If they are flying and an adult wants to swim, let the gene pool cleanse itself, but too many adults are stupid and let their children swim anyways. I'm all for them flying them and enforcing it if they save one child, which undoubtedly, they do.

Gulf fish are easy to catch... A popping cork and a 3" piece of a McDonalds straw will fill a cooler. NICE speck

Having performed CPR on many children over the years, including drownings..and having to experience the anguish of parents who knew their screwup cost them a child...

I'll take and head those red flags and thankful for them. You'd have to be a cold hearted SOB to experience that and think anything else.

I don't disdain it. Some of my favorite memories are at the beach with son wife and my son when he was little and my 7yo girl now. We are headed down Thursday.

She prefers to play in the sand and swim in the pool. So I play pack horse and tote everything down to the beach. Where my wife sits all day. I sit at the pool and we coordinate letting the 7yo have her best life.

I don't care for the pack horse thing. Doing what I can to minimize it.

We don’t go anymore it’s just too expensive actually ridiculous and don’t know how they even get them insured which that and inflation is probably why the cost has gone through the roof plus I find nothing attractive about paying so much money to sweat my ass off when I can do that here.

That’s the damn truth. We’d stopped going until we had family move to Elberta. Now we have a free place to stay so it’s a whole new ballgame

I have owned a condo in OB on a canal for almost 30 years, can count on my hand the number of times I’ve been to the beach to swim, always had a boat to get around inshore for wading, riding, eating, anchored up and offshore for fishing, all my swimming is usually done somewhere offshore with or without a scuba tank

I do understand those that might not care for it. Its all nice with a yeti, sandwiches, shade, and beer but it is actually considered a hostile environment.

You ever been in a rip current? I have and the flags were yellow!

Yep. I was about 12yo, a strong swimmer and thought it would be cool to swim from one sand bar over to the next one. Next thing I knew, I was way the hell out there. I don't know if they even had flags back then. Would'a been about 1977. I sure hadn't heard to swim diagonally towards the beach, but that's exactly what I did. I had started to get pretty nervous about the situation, but managed to calm down, think about it for a moment, and then started swimming diagonally back toward the center of the sand bar that I was well out beyond. A few minutes later, I noticed that I was actually approaching it. Then I was standing neck deep on it between waves. I rested a few minutes and centered up on it before starting on towards dry land. My father and stepmother were napping in the room at the time so I was on my own. I don't think I got wet unless it rained the rest of the trip.
