I want to take my father out of state next season for a whitetail gun hunt before he gets too long in the tooth. He's 73, still in good shape. He's been my hunting partner and best friend all my life. He's killed a bunch of free range Central AL trophies in his time, 120 class deer. What would be the best state and route that anyone could recommend or has had good experience with? Mid-December through Early January would be the ideal time period, possibly late November. No desire for a high fence hunt, but would love to get him a chance at a mature buck somewhere north of AL. All recommendations and thoughts are appreciated!

I think most people do Texas if they want something with a good guarantee.

Parts of Mississippi, Kentucky, and Kansas have some good deer, but I don’t think they can compete with some of those Texas low fence hunts if free range trophy deer is the goal.

I was fortunate to get to hunt North Texas about 5 years ago. The amount of deer seen in our 4 days was crazy. I always tell my buddy's, if you like deer hunting, you need to hunt Texas at least once in your life!

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

South Texas around Pearsall, #1 by a long shot if I was a short timer and wanted a 150+/- deer. run you about 6-7K before travel costs and tips( 10% of hunt) but you will always have the memory (and so will he.

Hunt there also and agree. Also shamrock tx has probably the most free range deer I’ve ever seen up in panhandle

Looking into the Texas Panhandle now, thanks for that advice. Pops seems more interested in going north to Illinois, Ohio, or Indiana. Anyone have experience with gun hunts there? I know Illinois would be shotgun only.

I wouldn’t go to those this year due to massive ehd die offs. I don’t know much about them otherwise though

Another vote for South Texas. As close to Laredo as you can get.

Try Kentucky if that’s the route he’s wanting to go. Personally I’d be careful of where in Ohio or Indiana you go due to the EHD outbreak.
