My son is turning 11 this week and said he wants an RC plane. I dont know anything about them. Does anyone know anything about them or have one they would recommend. I dont mind spending a little money on one but I dont want to spend a fortune as this may not be a long term adventure Thanks
I would get him started on learning to fly drones. This is a skill he can use for many years into adulthood and possibly use in some form as a job or side job.

I don't know about your area, but in McCalla there is an RC club that would love to introduce him to the hobby. They meet on Saturdays. It's been a while since I went with my papa. But it's been there for decades. We also have a variety of really good hobby shops in the Hoover/Pelham area.

Good advice. RC planes are tough
And can be very very expensive. A guy I know got into them for about a year and he has expensive toys. Said he didn’t have that kind of money lol. He had a blast doing it but but one crash can get expensive

My brother in law wanted to be a pilot his senior year in high school. Got him a higher end RC plane that had a computer program with it that taught you how to fly it. Hook the controller up the computer and do a flight simulator thing. Practiced for months on the simulator. The big day came to fly the RC plane and he crashed it on take off. Did about $1800 worth of damage. He sold it the next week 🤣
Something like this is a good starter and won't break the bank. Easy to fly and learn on. Have a really large open area to fly in and no wind or very lite wind, early mornings are usually best. Probably an RC club somewhere fairly close, there was one in the Muscle Shoals area.
I started on one of these years ago. I think they may still make them. It is a foam plane with a pusher prop that can be had tossed takeoff and land on grass. Easy to fly. Easy star.

If you get him one for his bday make sure all the other kids have already left the party. My grandad gave me one when I was 11 and it lasted about 15 minutes after a dork kid my mom made me invite crashed it into a pine tree🤣

There are probably several on this site old enough to remember the old tethered Cox funny cars and planes.

I still have all my rc planes although I havent flown anything in a few years due to life getting in the way. Slipperyrock gave some good advice, reach out to Birmingham RC club, this is the club I flew at for years and years. Maybe reach out to one of the club officers and chat with them. I was one of the flight training pilots there. Maybe decide if you want to go electric or with glow power,...most things have swung in the direction of electric power now I think. Ive actually got one or two high wing trainers in my basement that have not yet flown that were designed for glow powered engines but could be made E powered easily. I used to race club 40 pylon races- man, you talk about FUN!...we held several races up there at Bham RC as well as at other clubs. Here is a blast from the past; its a club40 pylon race up in Huntsville from 2010 that had like 29 or 30 pilots entered.Hard to think that this was 15 years ago! I wanted one when I was about ten and got one for Christmas. My dad and I took it out that morning. We started it and my dad was going to test it out. It took off, made a pass or two, and promptly nose dived and obliterated and that was that. I never got another one and really didn't want another one after that. The whole neighborhood had them and I can still hear the high pitch little engines running.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
I would suggest a ready to fly, foam. Get one with stabilization, so they are easy to fly right out of the box. Plus they won’t break the bank. They are tough enough to take multiple crashes. If he really gets into it, then you can step it up from there.

There is an rc plane strip between calera and alabaster on but 31 they fly most Saturdays
take him out there probably a lot of older fellas they would love to show a young man about them.
