You aren’t going to retain any soil amendments with the OM so low. Borrow a no till drill for the next 5 years and rebuild your soil. I believe he has been doing throw and mow.......The depth of your soil sample can have huge impact on what the OM% show on the test.....OM builds up in a layer on the top that gets thicker over time......Any OM that reaches below 8-10 inches or so after that is typically achieved through roots......If you're sampling below that top OM layer though it isnt going to show much.....His OM layer may only be a few inches thick It could also be his approach......Something I've said a bunch in the past is that there is more to it than just "not tilling".....You have to make a conscious effort every year to grow tons of biomass and recycle it with a good C:N balance if you want to build OM levels to 5-6%
