How big of an adjustment was it? Not financially but mentally. I’ve talk about retiring a lot and am fortunate enough that I could go in the next few years if I wanted to, and I’m only 53. That said, I plan on working another 6-9 years. Just depending on the level of stupidity I’m dealing with at the time. The older I get though, the more I enjoy working. Maybe not so much at my job, but even around the house. I can’t get up, sit on the couch and watch tv all day. I have to be working on some project or another. I just don’t think it’s healthy to do nothing. I figure when I retire, I’ll take a few weeks to relax and go somewhere with the wife, but then I’ll have to find something to do. Just today, I’ve loaded, moved, and unloaded two cubes of brick. Cut down five pine trees. Unloaded a truck load of sand and top soil, both by shovel. I’m worn out but feel good, if that makes sense.

I am 55 and retired July 21. I have stuff I can work on everyday around the house. I retired from teaching and have mot missed it once. Miss chatting with the co workers but I still keep in touch with the ones I like

3 1/2 years to go. Can't wait but guess I'll have to.

I struggle with days off. I can't ever imagine being fully retired and doing nothing. But my circumstances are different too. 57 with a 7yo means I won't get the same circumstances.

I think if I were empty nest and fully retired, I'd struggle. Over my life I've got more satisfaction out of helping others than myself. Meaning I'd take and finish a project for anyone else than for myself. I struggle to do things for myself.

I need to be needed I think. I recognize it. I know it's not normal. But without work of some king I feel listless. It sucks but it is what it is. I think I'd volunteer work to prevent that from happening.

I’m only 2 weeks in. Ask me in a year or so I guess. I have enough to keep me busy that long I believe. My wife wants the house updated. Bathrooms, kitchen, and paint throughout. We plan to take a couple of trips. I plan to play golf, hunt, fish, and garden.

I love it. I stay busy and can honestly say I’ve never missed work or been bored since I retired.

We made it about 3 years ago and there is not a thing about it I don’t like. I am very lucky though in that I retired to about 300 acres so being bored is not a problem. I have to say if you can retire and have things you want to do, get out asap because you never know what’s coming down the pike. I dreamed for years about getting here and the things I was gonna do, but heart issues and severe osteo arthritis has unfortunately limited me greatly because most of the things I was looking forward to require a functioning body.

Have a plan in place for day 1 to keep you busy beyond hunting and fishing
Do not sit down and watch tv every day
Build a barn from the ground up
Restore an old vehicle
Start hiking or walking every day

Honestly, whenever I go out, that’s my plan. I’m good friends with the pastor that runs Hargis Christian Camp here in Chelsea. I’ve talked to him and told him I want to be a full time volunteer, once I retire. Whether maintenance, helping with camps, etc…

I'm about 2 weeks from walking out the door. I'm 61, and gave the Navy 35 years in the Jet Fuel Business. Ready to give that stress to a younger man. Hunting Season is coming up, so I don't think I'll be bored for now. My house will keep me busy too.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone retiring in their 50’s that didn’t have a pension.

If you’re 53 and already miserable, find a new job. Life is too short to be miserable for another 10 years.

I retired when I was 52. I always had a lot of interests so I've kept myself always busy. I don't regret it. I think that's the key, keeping yourself occupied. My BIL on the other hand left a great job with Michelin after 25 years, and 3 weeks after he did he started working at Advance Auto. I told him the same thing and kind of knew how it was going to be because he had no interests. Now he doesn't even want to go hunting and fishing anymore and it's pretty sad. The only thing negative I can say about retiring young is that most of your friends will still be working so you need to keep busy when they are.

Retired at 62, took about two years and did everything that needed doing around the house and other necessaries. Got bored, worked at a gun store 2-3 days a week. Did that for five years or so. Just turned 75, had to stop deer hunting but still get after the coyotes. Have been visiting Civil War battlefields. Take my small camper, stay in a National Forest nearby and use my bicycle for the actual battlefield tour. Also kayak, backpack and canoe camp when the weather gets cold enough. Then there is always something interesting down in the toy room to take out and shoot.

Been retired 6 1/2 years now and love every minute of it . The first couple of weeks I really didn't know what to do with myself but I got over that really fast . I run my Beagles a couple of times a week when it is cool enough . The other times I have been making knives and some leather projects also buy guns mostly muzzleloaders that need repair and fix them back to good working condition also buy and sale a few bass boats and side by sides when I find a good deal . Point is find yourself as many hobbies as it takes to stay busy and take time off when you want to like I do and go Hunting and Fishing

You do need to make sure to keep in contact with friends and co workers you like. It takes work

Been retired 3 years. Don’t know how I had time to work. There isn’t enough time t do all I want to do. Know what you call a person who is happy on monday……retired!

My plan is to be done at 55 - 5 years to go. The wife will retire the same day I go. Our plans are to travel and enjoy ourselves.

Ditto. Best job I've ever had , just doesn't pay much.

All my friends, not that many when it really comes down to it say I retired early. But to be honest I was diagnosed and had surgery for 4,100% heart blockages. Fixed 3, said the fourth was way too risky. Went back to the job I'd had for 27 years in the steel plant. Only later too tear my rotator cuff and bicep. Then started having seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. So the put me on disability insurance that I had payed the threw all those years. So they say I'm retired, but my wife worries about anything I do on my own, unless I'm cleaning the house. The epileptic meds seem to be messing with my vision now. Dammit, I'm still gonna kill some deer or try!

And I'm just 50 and a half !!!
